Supreme Court Agrees to Urgent Hearing on Witness Influence in Karur Stampede Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Supreme Court has consented to an urgent hearing regarding allegations of attempts to influence witnesses in the Karur stampede case, which resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals during a political rally in 2025. A bench consisting of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu will address the matter following a mention by Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, who highlighted the pressing nature of the issue.

The allegations suggest that certain accused individuals who currently hold ministerial positions in the Tamil Nadu government are attempting to sway witnesses. The Supreme Court’s approval for an expedited listing of the petition indicates the gravity of the concerns raised.

Details of the Incident Under Investigation

The stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a public outreach programme conducted by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). A sudden influx of attendees resulted in a chaotic situation, leading to the tragic event that has since sparked widespread national concern regarding crowd management at large gatherings.

Previously, the Supreme Court transferred the investigation from a state-level Special Investigation Team to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), deeming an impartial inquiry necessary. A supervisory committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, has been formed to oversee the investigation’s progress.

The CBI is currently scrutinising various facets of the event, including crowd control measures, the necessary permissions for the rally, and the timeline of events on that day. A particularly significant area of investigation is the alleged seven-hour delay in the arrival of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK president Vijay, which officials are considering in relation to crowd dynamics.

Furthermore, the agency is examining the organisational framework of the event, evaluating who sanctioned the Karur venue, how the rally was integrated within party structures, and the timeline of notifications regarding Vijay’s participation.

Political Reactions and Legal Proceedings

In a related development, actor and TVK leader Vijay appeared before the CBI in Delhi for nearly seven hours as part of the ongoing investigation. His involvement further underscores the complexity of the case and its political ramifications.

Concurrently, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has petitioned the Supreme Court to prohibit TVK leaders, including Vijay, from making public statements regarding the case. The DMK argues that such remarks could compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation, particularly in light of statements attributed to a Tamil Nadu minister.

Filed by organising secretary RS Bharathi, the DMK’s petition highlights concerns over individuals previously chargesheeted in the case who now hold positions in the state cabinet following the 2026 Assembly elections. The DMK has expressed apprehension about potential influences on witnesses arising from these developments, prompting the urgent request for judicial intervention.

This petition, which currently awaits hearing in the Supreme Court, seeks to ensure that public discourse and political actions do not adversely affect the CBI’s ongoing investigation into the tragedy. The outcomes of these legal actions may significantly influence the direction of the inquiry and the accountability of those involved.
