Speculation in Bangladesh grows over Sheikh Hasina’s possible return as India ‘examines’ extradition request

The CSR Journal Magazine

Will India send former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to her country? The question has triggered widespread speculation in Bangladesh following remarks by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during an interaction with visiting Bangladeshi journalists in New Delhi on Monday.

According to sources, Misri was responding to a question about the return of the Awami League president, who is currently staying in India. He stated that Hasina’s extradition is a “judicial and legal process” requiring communication and discussion between the two governments.

“We are examining these issues,” Misri said, adding that India is ready to work together with Bangladeshi authorities on the matter.

Mixed reactions in Bangladesh

Political and administrative circles in Dhaka have interpreted the Foreign Secretary’s statement in different ways.

Some believe this marks the first time a top Indian official has made an openly positive remark about Hasina’s possible return. In October last year, the Bangladesh government had sent a ‘note verbale’ — a formal diplomatic communication — to New Delhi, requesting Hasina’s repatriation. At that time, India reportedly did not act on the request, citing incomplete documentation.

Others, however, argue that Misri’s remarks were purely procedural, meant only to underline the legal nature of the issue rather than indicate any imminent action. Analysts believe there is little chance of a quick resolution, as such matters typically require extensive legal and bilateral consultations.
Many in Dhaka suggest that India may take up the matter after Bangladesh’s next elected government assumes office, rather than engage deeply with the current interim administration.

Possible verdict could increase pressure

Meanwhile, the political situation in Bangladesh remains tense. The International Criminal Court in Dhaka is expected to deliver its verdict in Hasina’s case for alleged crimes against humanity by late October or early November.

Witness hearings began this week, and observers say a conviction could intensify pressure on India to respond to Bangladesh’s demand for Hasina’s return.

However, diplomatic sources in Delhi indicate that India will seek security guarantees from Dhaka before taking any step. Since Hasina is currently regarded as a guest of India, New Delhi has the diplomatic right to ensure her safety and fair treatment upon extradition.

Awami League’s stand

Within the Awami League, several leaders believe that Sheikh Hasina may choose to return voluntarily once she feels confident about receiving a fair trial.

In a recent address on the party’s official Facebook page, Hasina stated she was “not afraid to face justice.” Her supporters maintain that law and order in Bangladesh have collapsed, pointing to reports of party workers being attacked or killed in prisons.

The Awami League has also accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration of mistreating its members, claiming that over 40 party workers were beaten in custody and denied medical care.

No official confirmation yet

For now, both New Delhi and Dhaka remain cautious. No official confirmation has been made regarding Sheikh Hasina’s extradition or voluntary return.

Diplomatic observers believe that any concrete development will depend on Bangladesh’s internal political stability and future government decisions, as well as India’s assessment of bilateral and security implications.
