Sony Increases PlayStation Plus Subscription Prices in India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sony has raised the prices of its PlayStation Plus subscription plans in India across all membership tiers, including Essential, Extra, and Deluxe. This adjustment has been communicated to current subscribers via email, with the company citing “ongoing market conditions” as the reason behind the price increase. The updated prices are now visible on Sony’s PlayStation website and are applicable to both new and existing members.

Details of the Price Hike

The revised pricing structure indicates significant increases for the Essential plan, which is the most basic subscription tier. Specifically, the one-month Essential subscription has risen from Rs 499 to Rs 649. The three-month plan has also seen an increase, now priced at Rs 1,559, compared to the previous cost of Rs 1,199. The annual subscription fee has surged from Rs 3,949 to Rs 5,139, reflecting a trend of rising costs.

Notably, the hike is not limited to the Essential tier; the pricing for the Extra and Deluxe plans has also been adjusted. The one-month subscription for the PS Plus Extra plan is now Rs 979, a jump from Rs 749. The three-month option is now Rs 2,599, while the annual subscription has increased to Rs 8,709. For the Deluxe membership, the monthly price has risen to Rs 1,109, the three-month plan is now Rs 2,989, and the yearly fee has surged from Rs 7,599 to Rs 9,879.

These changes signal a broader trend of adjusting subscription fees in response to external market influences, a decision Sony has recently made in other international markets as well.

Transition Period for Existing Subscribers

The new pricing structure will take immediate effect for all new subscribers in India. However, current PS Plus members will not see these changes reflected until their next billing cycle, provided that it occurs on or after July 19. This arrangement offers a temporary reprieve from the price hike for existing users who renew their subscriptions before this specified date.

Sony has clarified that if a user’s subscription renews before July 19, they will continue to be charged according to the old pricing model. Nonetheless, any adjustments made to the subscription, such as changing membership tiers or extending the subscription, before that date will result in the user being subject to the new pricing structure.

This strategic decision follows shortly after Sony implemented similar price adjustments in selected global markets, highlighting a consistent approach to adaptation amid shifting market dynamics.
