Sony Launches Reon Pocket Pro Plus Wearable Air Cooler Amid Rising Heat

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sony has unveiled the Reon Pocket Pro Plus, a wearable air cooler designed to alleviate discomfort caused by high temperatures. As global temperatures continue to rise, especially during summer months, individuals often find it challenging to cope with the heat. This innovative product represents a potential solution, offering a portable means of cooling the body while outside in hot weather.

The Reon Pocket Pro Plus is an upgraded version of its predecessor, the Reon Pocket Pro, which was initially introduced in 2019. While it has gained traction in various markets, Sony has yet to launch this product in India. Observers speculate it may not become available in India, despite its potential benefits in hot urban areas.

How the Reon Pocket Pro Plus Functions

This wearable cooler employs the Peltier effect, a thermoelectric principle that allows it to chill the user’s body effectively. It includes a metal cooling plate placed against the neck, which cools through electricity, thereby lowering skin temperature directly. This mechanism functions similarly to a mini electronic ice pack, powered by USB-C.

The choice of the neck as the cooling area is intentional; it is regarded as a strategic point for regulating body temperature. The blood vessels near the skin in this area help enhance the cooling effect, which is why athletes frequently utilise cooling towels around their necks during intense physical activity.

Sony claims that the Reon Pocket Pro Plus exhibits a 20 per cent enhancement in cooling efficiency over the earlier model. It reportedly facilitates an additional decrease of two degrees Celsius in skin temperature, coupled with an innovative design featuring adjustable flexible arms to ensure a better fit around the neck and shoulders.

Additional Features and Battery Life

In addition to its cooling capabilities, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus features a reconfigured exhaust vent. This vent allows users to direct warm air away from their bodies, accommodating various clothing styles, including high-collared attire. The device is also equipped with a built-in fan designed to circulate air effectively around the cooling area, alongside an automatic shutdown mechanism to prevent overheating.

Sony has also revealed a second-generation accessory called the Reon Pocket Tag sensor, which is 18 per cent smaller than its earlier version. This sensor tracks ambient temperature and humidity, enabling the device to adjust its cooling output automatically. Furthermore, users can manage the device through a dedicated smartphone application, although it operates independently as well.

In terms of battery life, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus is reported to function for up to ten hours when set to its second-highest cooling level, making it suitable for extended outdoor use.

Pricing and Availability

Currently, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus is exclusively available in the UK and European markets, where it is priced at £199 and €229, respectively. Future plans for a global rollout have yet to be outlined by the company. As expectations grow regarding its performance, consumers are keen to learn whether this innovative product will soon be available in other regions, including India.

While the Reon Pocket Pro Plus presents a novel solution to dealing with heat, its availability will ultimately determine its reach and impact on customers seeking relief from high temperatures during the summer months.
