Sonam Wangchuk Will Join CJP Protest If Dharmendra Pradhan Does Not Resign By June 5

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sonam Wangchuk, an education reformer and climate activist, has announced his intention to participate in a protest scheduled for June 6 in Delhi, contingent upon the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan by June 5. The protest will occur at Jantar Mantar and has been organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led advocacy group focused on bringing accountability into the education system.

Wangchuk expressed his concern, stating, “If this does not happen even by June 5, I too will be compelled to join you all on June 6, to make this request in Delhi.”

Reasons for Supporting the Movement

Wangchuk’s involvement is not solely related to recent controversies involving examinations but extends to broader issues concerning the implementation of education reforms in India. He noted that many young people participating in the protest are highlighting problems linked to NEET, CUET, and CBSE examinations, which he believes indicate significant structural issues within the education system.

While discussing the state of governance, Wangchuk remarked on the government’s intentions, giving them a perfect score for ambition. However, he emphasised that the effectiveness of these intentions would be measured by actual actions taken on the ground, thus underscoring the importance of genuine progress.

He highlighted that improvements in educational conditions in rural and remote regions are crucial for achieving India’s long-term developmental goals, reinforcing the significance of the movement.

Experience and Commitment to Education

Sonam Wangchuk has dedicated over forty years to the field of education, particularly in rural areas. He stated that his long-standing commitment stems from a belief that the success of India’s development journey is inextricably linked to the quality of education available in village schools.

He referenced the National Education Policy and the vision for a Developed India by 2047. While he acknowledged the positive intentions behind these initiatives, he cautioned that execution remains a formidable challenge, necessitating focused efforts to translate policy into tangible results.

Engagement with CJP Organisers

Before committing to support the impending protest, Wangchuk engaged in discussions with Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of CJP, to understand the nature of the movement. He sought reassurance that the campaign would be led by Indian youth rather than influenced by external entities. Following their conversation, he expressed satisfaction with the group’s intentions.

Dipke welcomed Wangchuk’s decision to join the protest, characterising it as a significant enhancement to the movement’s credibility. He confirmed that the protest would proceed as planned at Jantar Mantar on June 6, with a focus on drawing attention to the alleged shortcomings in examination systems and broader concerns regarding the governance of education in the country.

The mobilisation on June 6 is expected to garner significant attention, shining a light on pressing issues that, according to activists and participants, should be addressed to ensure a robust and equitable education system in India.
