The review meeting focused on significant initiatives for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, notably the potential for international outreach through the Davos event and the pursuit of UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. This meeting was led by Dr Kiran Kulkarni, the Secretary of the Marathi Language and Cultural Affairs Department, and took place at the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) headquarters.

Attendees included NTKMA Commissioner Shekhar Singh, along with senior officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and other relevant departments. The gathering aimed to reinforce the cultural identity and global presence of the Kumbh Mela, which is celebrated every twelve years.

Proposals for Cultural Initiatives

During the meeting, a variety of proposals were examined to enhance the Kumbh Mela’s offerings. Among these was the ‘Har Ghar Kumbh’ initiative, which aims to encourage local participation. Additional discussions revolved around Maharashtra’s Spiritual Thought Leadership programmes and the establishment of spiritual and knowledge conclaves.

Another notable proposal was the creation of a world-class Simhastha Interpretation and Experience Centre. This centre is intended to highlight the rich history, traditions, and spiritual significance of the Kumbh Mela, which draws devotees and tourists from various parts of the globe.

The meeting also addressed the development of a Kalagram to exhibit the traditional handicrafts, folk, and tribal arts of Maharashtra. This initiative aims to promote cultural heritage in collaboration with the South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC) and the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC).

Progress on Conservation and Development Works

The review included an analysis of ongoing conservation, restoration, and development projects led by the Archaeological Survey of India at key heritage sites in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. These sites include Sangam Tirth, Old Kushavarta, Naroshankar Temple, and Gautameshwar Temple, among others.

Dr Kulkarni emphasized the importance of completing all ongoing projects within the established timelines, ensuring that quality is not compromised. He instructed the relevant agencies to enhance collaboration, swiftly address implementation challenges, and ensure all conservation efforts are completed before the commencement of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027.

In summary, the meeting aimed to unify various cultural, conservation, and promotional efforts to prepare for an event that is expected to attract millions. The initiatives discussed will not only elevate the status of the Kumbh Mela but also ensure that the cultural heritage of the region is preserved and celebrated effectively.
