Sanjeev Kapoor Says Salary Dispute Led Him to Reject MasterChef India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sanjeev Kapoor revealed that he initially declined the opportunity to join MasterChef India due to a specific condition regarding his payment. He stated that he requested a salary that was “one rupee more” than fellow actor Akshay Kumar. This revelation came during a conversation with Vir Sanghvi on his show, Table 1. Kapoor emphasised that this was a fundamental requirement for him when the show approached him for its inaugural season.

During his discussion, he clarified that his stance was not motivated by ego. When questioned about the significance of just one rupee, he maintained that it was more than a trivial matter. This insistence stemmed from his belief in his unique capability to fulfill the role effectively. Despite the producers having signed Akshay Kumar for the first season, Kapoor felt he was the only suitable candidate for the position.

The producers extended what they described as a lucrative offer, but ultimately, they did not agree to Kapoor’s conditions. He expressed that he was undeterred by their refusal and was willing to walk away from the negotiations without compromise.

Return for the Third Season

Years later, during the run-up to the third season, Kapoor was approached again by the show’s makers, who communicated that MasterChef India was not performing as expected and that they needed his involvement. Initially sceptical about accepting the role, he was later persuaded by the producers’ assurances that they would honour his terms. However, he remarked that their commitment was not entirely realised.

Kapoor explained that by this time, he was also launching his television channel, Food Food, which aimed to elevate the profiles of other chefs, including Saransh Goila and Harpal Singh Sokhi. He believed that strengthening the food entertainment landscape was essential and saw MasterChef as a pivotal factor in that growth.

Concerned about the potential negative impact on the food industry if MasterChef failed in India, Kapoor felt compelled to participate. He articulated that success in the culinary entertainment sector was crucial not only for his personal brand but for the broader ecosystem related to food on television.

Negotiations on Payment

In response to an inquiry from Sanghvi about whether the producers ultimately agreed to pay him the requested amount, Kapoor affirmed that they likely did meet his conditions. He termed this requirement as non-negotiable, reiterating that if he could not secure the agreed remuneration, it reflected poorly on the industry standards.

MasterChef India first premiered in 2010, featuring Akshay Kumar, Chef Kunal Kapur, and Chef Ajay Chopra as judges in its inaugural season. The show aimed to bring culinary competition to Indian television and has since become a significant contributor to the genre.

Kapoor’s involvement in the show has not only elevated his own profile but has also influenced the careers of many aspiring chefs. His beliefs surrounding the importance of the food entertainment industry remain a driving force in his professional decisions.
