Rukmini Vasanth May Replace Sai Pallavi in MS Subbulakshmi Biopic

The CSR Journal Magazine

Reports surrounding the much-anticipated biopic of Bharat Ratna and renowned Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi have suggested a potential change in the lead role, with Rukmini Vasanth being considered as a replacement for Sai Pallavi. Although there has been no official confirmation from the film’s production team, the speculation has sparked conversations among fans and industry watchers.

Sources indicate that Rukmini Vasanth may take centre stage in this significant cinematic portrayal of the celebrated singer. This development unfolds as Vasanth gears up for her Telugu film debut alongside Jr NTR in a project titled Dragon, directed by Prashanth Neel.

Previously, Sai Pallavi was linked to the role, with reports claiming that she was set to embody the title character. There were indications that her preparations included taking lessons in Carnatic music to authentically portray MS Subbulakshmi’s character.

Production Details Emerge Amid Casting Speculations

According to insider sources, director Gowtam Tinnanuri is reportedly finalising his research on the film, while Sai Pallavi has been actively reviewing archival footage to deepen her understanding of the iconic singer’s legacy. The film was anticipated to commence filming later in 2026, although there has been no formal announcement regarding the project’s timeline.

In addition to the biopic, Sai Pallavi has recently been associated with other major projects. She is being considered for the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, following Deepika Padukone’s withdrawal from the film. This has added to the speculation surrounding her availability for the MS Subbulakshmi biopic.

Furthermore, Sai Pallavi is set to star in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of Ramayana, taking on the role of Sita. This film features a notable cast, including Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. The first part of Ramayana is scheduled for a theatrical release during Diwali and is said to be a contemporary retelling of the Hindu epic based on Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Rukmini Vasanth’s Upcoming Projects and Their Impact

In contrast, Rukmini Vasanth is preparing for her role opposite Jr NTR in Dragon, which has reportedly faced delays of nearly a year. The film, marking a collaboration between Jr NTR and Prashanth Neel, was first announced on the actor’s birthday in 2022. Productions began ceremoniously with a pooja event held in Hyderabad on August 9, 2025, adding to the film’s significance.

Recently, Jr NTR shared an update on social media, confirming a new release date for Dragon as June 11, 2027. He also teased that the first glimpse of the film would be revealed on May 20. Earlier communications from the film’s official channels had cited June 26, 2026, as the intended release date, sparking anticipations around the project.

While discussions about the MS Subbulakshmi biopic and its lead characters continue, no formal announcement has been made to confirm changes in the casting. As both Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth are involved in high-profile projects, the evolving narrative keeps fans eager for updates on who will ultimately take on the pivotal role of the iconic Carnatic musician.
