The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a Red Alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across various parts of Himachal Pradesh, effective from July 20 to July 21. This warning suggests an increased likelihood of flash floods, landslides, rising water levels in rivers, and poor visibility in several districts.

According to Senior Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma from IMD Himachal Pradesh, widespread rainfall is anticipated throughout the state until July 23, with the most intense periods expected in the upcoming two days. He noted that in the last 24 hours, many areas observed light to moderate rainfall, with Mahore witnessing the highest totals, followed closely by Manali and Kangra.

Sharma stated that the Red Alert specifically covers Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts for both days, where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is projected. He indicated that high weather intensity is forecasted for these locations, with very heavy rainfall likely to occur.

Further Alerts and Rainfall Expectations

An Orange Alert has been issued for districts including Una, Hamirpur, Kullu, and Solan, while a Yellow Alert is in place for Bilaspur, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti, due to the potential for heavy rain. Sharma mentioned that rainfall intensity is expected to decrease slightly from July 22, although significant weather activity will persist.

On July 22, an Orange Alert will be activated for Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur, and a Yellow Alert will remain active for most remaining districts. The rainfall is expected to last until July 23,” he added. He noted that weather conditions might gradually improve between July 24 and July 26, though scattered rainfall may still affect the middle and higher hill regions of the state.

Advisories for Public Safety

The IMD has advised residents to avoid proximity to rivers, streams, and other water bodies, as ongoing rainfall could cause water levels to rise sharply. Sharma emphasized that individuals should steer clear of areas prone to flooding and remain vigilant about potential landslides along highways and hilly routes. He urged travellers to heed weather advisories issued by local authorities.

Moreover, motorists have been cautioned about reduced visibility, particularly in the districts of Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, due to low clouds and fog. He informed that visibility may significantly diminish in these regions until July 22 and advised extra caution for those commuting through these areas.

In terms of rainfall statistics, Sharma reported that Himachal Pradesh has experienced rainfall that is 7 per cent below normal for the month of July so far, with a cumulative seasonal deficit of 18 per cent below average. He noted that only four districts—Una, Shimla, Kullu, and Kinnaur—have received above-normal rainfall during this season, whereas the remaining districts continue to face below-average conditions.
