Rashid Khan Reflects on Injury Comeback, Flags Gujarat Titans Middle-Order Issues

The CSR Journal Magazine

Following the Gujarat Titans’ recent victory against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rashid Khan addressed his recovery from a back injury and the team’s ongoing struggles with the middle order. After the match, Khan mentioned that he took additional time for rehabilitation to ensure he returned to full fitness. The Titans’ stellar fielding and disciplined bowling, led by Arshad Khan’s three-wicket haul alongside two wickets each from Rashid Khan and Jason Holder, managed to keep RCB’s formidable batting lineup to a total of 155 runs.

Middle-Order Challenges Evident in Run Chase

In the run chase, Gujarat Titans encountered difficulties in their middle order, allowing RCB to maintain competitive pressure despite the modest target. However, strong performances from captain Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler during the powerplay provided critical support. Currently, the Titans sit fifth in the points table with five wins from nine matches, accumulating a total of 10 points.

Rashid Khan’s Injury Background

Rashid Khan has been dealing with back issues for an extended period and underwent surgery following the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India. He returned to international cricket in March 2024, but the injury has limited his participation primarily to limited-overs formats. His last Test appearance was against Afghanistan in January of the previous year, where he bowled over 50 overs. In the past two IPL seasons, Khan struggled to maintain the same level of wicket-taking ability, collecting only 19 wickets in 27 matches. Teams often adopted strategies to either play cautiously against him or to aggressively target him with boundaries.

Current Season Performance

This season, Rashid Khan has showcased an improvement, securing 10 wickets in nine matches with an average of 27.40 and personal best figures of 3/17. His performance against RCB included a disciplined spell of 2/19 across four overs, which saw him take the important wickets of Tim David and Devdutt Padikkal. In a conversation on ‘Match Centre Live,’ Khan reflected on not following a suitable fitness regimen after his injury, stating his rehabilitation had not progressed as he had hoped, particularly due to the limited time available before returning to competitive play.

Reflections on His Bowling Strategy

Khan emphasized the critical nature of bowling in the correct areas and maintaining a steady economy rate, particularly during the middle overs. He noted that any runs conceded were generally due to poorly executed deliveries and expressed his intent to minimize such instances moving forward. This focus on consistently executing a proper length, around 5 to 5.5 meters, has proven beneficial for his performance.

Addressing the Team’s Middle-Order Issues

Rashid Khan also candidly discussed the challenges faced by the Titans’ middle order, mentioning players like Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Tewatia not being able to contribute sufficiently. He acknowledged that weaknesses exist within every team, and fixating on these shortcomings could detract from the overall performance. Khan stressed the importance of staying focused, particularly in high-stakes environments like the IPL, where mental clarity is crucial for success.

Team Strategy and Focus on Opposition

He noted that every team grapples with certain vulnerabilities, whether in batting or bowling. Khan urged his teammates to concentrate on their responsibilities and not dwell on perceived weaknesses. He pointed out that the Titans possess a strong bowling lineup, which should help them restrict opponents and facilitate easier batting conditions.
