The curfew in Saptari specifically affects regions within the Rajbiraj municipality, commencing at 8 am on Friday.

The District Administration Office initiated the curfew as a preemptive action following protests linked to the communal violence, indicating the authorities’ attempts to contain escalating unrest that has spread from its origin in Sunsari.

The disturbances began during community celebrations on Sunday, where discord arose over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags between two rival religious groups. A verbal dispute quickly escalated into violence, prompting police intervention, during which one individual was killed and multiple others sustained injuries, including security personnel.

As violence continued to spread, a teenager lost his life in additional clashes within the Siraha district of Madhesh province on Thursday. Following that, reports surfaced of a casualty associated with the initial incidents in Sunsari, with his passing noted in Koshi province. In a separate event, a police constable, Narad Pariyar, suffered a bullet wound inflicted by an unknown assailant while on duty in Lahan municipality, Siraha, further amplifying the security concerns in the region.

Authorities are taking measures to enhance security and have enforced prohibitory orders in several areas. The violent incidents have prompted a comprehensive review of law enforcement responses, aiming to restore order amidst these challenging circumstances.

Government Response and Community Appeal

The District Security Committee in Sarlahi has mandated that individuals entering Nepal from India must present valid identification. Assistant Chief District Officer Hom Prasad Ghimire confirmed this requirement as a further step to bolster security and manage the volatile situation across the border.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the nation on Thursday, urging for calm and cooperation among communities. He committed to a neutral and thorough investigation into the violence, assuring that those responsible would be held accountable.
