Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh produced a remarkable performance to win the silver medal in the men’s +110kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Thursday. The 28-year-old lifter from Amritsar finished with a combined total of 388kg, narrowly missing out on the gold medal by just one kilogram after an intense contest.

Record-Breaking Snatch Performance

Lovepreet made an impressive start in the snatch event, opening with a successful lift of 168kg before confidently clearing 173kg on his second attempt. He then stunned the competition by lifting 176kg on his third and final attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process.

The record-breaking effort gave the Indian a commanding 10kg lead at the end of the snatch section. His consistency and technical execution placed him in a strong position to challenge for the gold medal heading into the clean and jerk.

Rivals Face Setbacks

The competition also witnessed a dramatic twist as Samoa’s Sanele Mao, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion, failed all three of his snatch attempts at 175kg. His early exit significantly altered the medal race, leaving Lovepreet and New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti as the leading contenders.

Despite holding a healthy advantage after the opening discipline, Lovepreet faced stiff competition during the clean and jerk. David Liti produced a brilliant comeback to edge past the Indian lifter, denying him the gold medal by the narrowest of margins.

Another Medal for India

Although he fell just one kilogram short of the top podium finish, Lovepreet’s silver medal added another valuable medal to India’s tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026. His record-setting snatch and determined performance highlighted his class on the international stage and reinforced India’s growing strength in weightlifting.
