Congress Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has raised questions regarding the government’s reluctance to engage in extensive discussions on the adjournment motion. On July 22, 2026, Priyanka Gandhi pointed out a discrepancy in the government’s approach, highlighting that a ten-hour discussion was held on the national song ‘Vande Mataram,’ yet the same level of commitment was not shown for pressing issues such as the NEET controversy.

Call for Comprehensive Debate on NEET Controversy

In her statements to reporters, Priyanka Gandhi underscored that the Opposition had moved an adjournment motion to facilitate a thorough examination of the NEET issue. She emphasised the need for a robust debate, arguing that if the government could dedicate eight hours to discussing a song, it should similarly allocate time for critical educational matters impacting students. “A proper discussion can take place on this issue, especially given the importance of NEET,” she asserted.

Before her remarks, another prominent Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, noted that several Opposition parties had submitted a notice under Rule 267. This ruling would allow for the suspension of routine business in the Rajya Sabha, enabling immediate discussions related to police actions against student protesters and the detention of Opposition leaders. The Opposition has been vocal about its desire to address these pressing issues without delay.

Ramesh mentioned that the current deadlock in the Rajya Sabha was primarily due to the government’s persistent refusal to allow discussions under Rule 267. He described the situation as detrimental to democratic processes and maintained that the government’s lack of responsiveness was a significant obstacle in addressing key issues faced by the public.

Government’s Stance on Discussions and Legislative Business

The government has yet to publicly respond to the allegations made by the Opposition regarding its handling of legislative discussions.
