Priyanka Chopra Discusses Transition from Bollywood to Hollywood

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas articulated on Wednesday that her shift from Bollywood to Hollywood has not yet provided the same breadth of opportunities she experienced in India. While speaking at the Cannes Lions conference, the 43-year-old noted that her Hindi-language career enabled her to collaborate with many renowned filmmakers and actors, tell diverse stories, and delve into various genres. She expressed disappointment that her English-language projects have not yet afforded her similar diversity.

The Mary Kom star indicated her intention to expand the variety in her roles within the English-language film sector. Her goal is to bring the same range she experienced in India to her projects moving forward. Chopra underlined her commitment to altering industry perceptions regarding the roles available to Indian actors.

She stated, “I’ve worked with all the best filmmakers and the best actors… Whereas in Hollywood, I haven’t really done that as much.” This sentiment reflects her desire for more significant lead roles that stray from conventional industry preconceptions about Indian actors.

Personal Changes and Professional Choices

On a personal note, Priyanka described how marriage and motherhood have dramatically transformed her life. She remarked that her priorities have shifted significantly, saying, “I don’t just pack my bags and go off for a movie anymore.” She highlighted her new selectiveness in both her professional commitments and personal time, indicating a balance between her work and family life.

Priyanka Chopra is married to singer Nick Jonas, and the couple shares a daughter named Malti. She mentioned, “I’m navigating working-mom life,” which has instilled in her a newfound respect for her own mother’s sacrifices and choices. This insight adds depth to her understanding of the challenges facing working mothers, especially in the entertainment industry.

Previously, Chopra discussed her rationale for stepping away from Bollywood during a peak period in her career. In a candid conversation on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, she expressed feeling constrained in her work in India, leading her to seek opportunities outside Bollywood.

Upcoming Projects and Future Aspirations

Chopra’s international credits encompass a variety of films, including Baywatch, The Matrix Resurrections, and the recently released The Bluff, along with popular series like Quantico and Citadel. She is set to appear in SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi and is also working on a project featuring Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom.

Additionally, she has a biographical drama titled Amri directed by Mira Nair in the pipeline. During a recent conversation with Fortune India, she mentioned an upcoming collaboration with Angelina Jolie but withheld specific details regarding the nature of the project.

The actor aims to produce films that broaden the narratives available to Indian actors, responding to what she perceives as a glass ceiling in the entertainment industry. Her remarks indicate a determination not only to advance her career but also to contribute to a more diverse portrayal of Indian actors on global platforms.
