Prime Minister Narendra Modi Conducts Roadshow in Howrah Amid Phase 1 of West Bengal Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant roadshow in Howrah on April 23, as part of the election campaign for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. This event was marked by a large turnout, reflecting the BJP’s efforts to galvanise support ahead of the crucial voting period.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi addressed an election rally in Mathurapur, where he accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of infringing upon the rights of women in Bengal. His statements were part of a broader narrative aiming to highlight the BJP’s commitment to women’s empowerment.

Following the roadshow, Modi continued to address rally attendees in Krishnanagar, asserting that a significant change was imminent in Bengal’s political landscape. He urged the electorate to consider the collective voice for transformation, encapsulated in the chant “Paltano Dorkar,” which means “change is necessary.”

Allegations Against TMC Government

During his speeches, PM Modi contended that the TMC government had voted against a Constitutional Amendment Bill designed to enhance women’s reservation in parliament and state assemblies, proposing its implementation from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that such actions demonstrate a disregard for the rights of women, significantly in a state that venerates goddess Durga.

Modi expressed his conviction that the electorate should hold the TMC accountable for “atrocities” against women, suggesting that the upcoming vote represents an opportunity to end what he described as fifteen years of oppression under TMC rule. He declared, “Now, we will not tolerate injustice anymore. Enough is enough.” This rhetoric aimed to mobilise voters by framing their choices as a clear stance against perceived injustices.

Additionally, he characterised the TMC’s promises as “fake” and implored the citizens to consider transitioning to a “double-engine government” led by the BJP, which he argued would facilitate development. By drawing comparisons between the BJP’s governance at the Centre and the TMC’s rule in West Bengal, he emphasised his party’s achievements in various welfare schemes.

Current Political Context and Upcoming Elections

As part of the ongoing election process, West Bengal recorded over 77 per cent voter turnout by 3.30 PM during the first phase of polling on 152 seats. This strong participation marks a vital aspect of the electoral process and indicates the engagement of the electorate in state governance matters.

The remaining seats are scheduled for polling on April 29, with the results set to be announced on May 4. This upcoming election is viewed as critical for all political parties involved, particularly for the BJP, which seeks to strengthen its presence in the state.

With the elections shaping up to be a pivotal moment for West Bengal, PM Modi’s campaign strategy appears to focus on addressing local concerns while galvanising support through public engagement and rallies. The importance of the upcoming voting days is highlighted, as they will ultimately determine the future governance of the state.
