Prashant Kishor Challenges Role of Senior Officials in Bharat Tiwari Encounter

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, has raised concerns regarding the involvement of senior officials from Patna in the recent police encounter in Bhojpur district, Bihar, which resulted in the death of Bharat Tiwari. Kishor stated these concerns following his visit to Tiwari’s village, where he met with the grieving family. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the judicial probe initiated by the Samrat Choudhary government, arguing that it should involve a sitting judge rather than a retired judge, and should extend its scope beyond Bhojpur district.

During a press conference prior to a panchayat convened to protest Tiwari’s death, Kishor remarked on the family’s clear demands. He indicated that they were not seeking financial compensation or government employment, but rather insisted on justice. Kishor conveyed, “That is the sentiment I, too, express.” His comments came following a meeting he had with Tiwari’s family in Patna a few days after the incident occurred on June 17.

Kishor further emphasised that the investigation must delve into the actions of the police in Bhojpur. He urged that a thorough examination be conducted to determine if local officers acted independently or under directives from higher authorities in Patna. He stated that significant figures within the state, including the Director General of Police and the Home department, should also come under scrutiny.

Tiwari’s Family Rejects Police Claims

The family of Bharat Tiwari has vehemently denied police assertions that he was mentally unstable. They highlighted that the 28-year-old, who was unemployed, had recently engaged as a social and political activist. His social media activities allegedly irked local authorities, leading to police intervention on the day leading to his death. This particular incident has ignited widespread discontent on social media platforms, generating considerable public outrage.

Critics of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have linked Tiwari’s killing to a broader trend they perceive in the Samrat Choudhary administration, which they label as following a model akin to “bulldozer justice” seen under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The unrest, particularly among the Brahmin community, has raised concerns for the ruling coalition in Bihar, especially with Assembly elections approaching in the neighbouring state within six months.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar has countered the opposition’s narrative, accusing them of attempting to exploit the unfortunate incident for political gain. Senior minister Shrawon Kumar, who is also the legislative party leader for Janata Dal (United), stated that the opposition was merely attempting to “score political points”. Kumar expressed that the government was equally saddened by Tiwari’s untimely demise, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to the rule of law.

Political Repercussions and Ongoing Tensions

The political landscape surrounding this case has intensified following Kishor’s demands for a more comprehensive judicial inquiry into the encounter. Concurrently, the state government has been defending its actions while accusing opposition parties of politicising this incident. The officials have reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law, which they assert remains a cornerstone of governance under both Nitish Kumar and Samrat Choudhary.

As the events unfold, the case has not only captured public attention but has also amplified the dialogues surrounding law enforcement, governance, and accountability in Bihar. Observers are keenly following the developments, particularly with both the state government’s response and Kishor’s initiatives shaping the ongoing discourse related to police actions and state authority.
