PM Modi Reviews Wildlife Corridor Built To Reduce Man-Animal Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a review of the 12-kilometre-long Wildlife Corridor in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on April 14, 2023. This corridor is noted as one of the longest in Asia and has been developed by Uttarakhand as part of the elevated section of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The Prime Minister’s visit took place ahead of the inauguration of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor.

During this visit, Prime Minister Modi visited the Jai Maa Daat Kali Temple in the vicinity of Dehradun, where he participated in a religious observance. Children present at the temple performed an aarti, and the Prime Minister was seen engaging with them, indicating his involvement in the local culture.

Details of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor spans 213 kilometres and is designed with six lanes for access-controlled travel. The project has been developed at an expenditure exceeding Rs 12,000 crore. It extends through the territories of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, facilitating efficient transportation within the northern region of India.

The corridor incorporates a variety of features aimed at mitigating man-animal conflict, reflecting the ecological consideration of local wildlife and biodiversity. The design includes ten interchanges, three Railway Over Bridges (ROBs), four major bridges, and twelve wayside facilities to enhance connectivity. Furthermore, the corridor is equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) intended to create a safer travelling environment for users.

Focusing on sustainable development, the corridor includes dedicated wildlife protection elements. It features eight animal passes, two elephant underpasses, both measuring 200 metres, and a 370-metre tunnel situated near the Daat Kali temple. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that wildlife can move freely and safely without being impacted by the expressway.

Impact on Regional Development

The establishment of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor is projected to significantly bolster economic growth in the region. By enhancing connectivity among key tourism and economic hubs, the corridor is anticipated to create new opportunities for trade and development. The improvements in transportation infrastructure are expected to facilitate smoother travel and contribute positively to local economies.

This project aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Modi to develop next-generation infrastructure that prioritises both high-speed connectivity and environmental sustainability. It aims to improve the quality of life for citizens and reflects a commitment to integrating infrastructure development with ecological responsibility.

With the inauguration planned for later today, the corridor stands out not just as an infrastructure project but also as a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by urbanisation and wildlife conservation in northern India. The Prime Minister’s emphasis on balancing development with environmental concerns aims to set a precedent for future infrastructural initiatives across the country.
