Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Agricola Medal for 2026 from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during a ceremony held at the FAO headquarters in Rome. He remarked that this accolade symbolises India’s enduring commitment to enhancing human welfare. Modi dedicated the award to Indian farmers and the agricultural scientific community, acknowledging their relentless efforts to secure food and nutrition for the nation and beyond.

He articulated that the honour is a testament to India’s dedication to food security and sustainable development. Modi emphasised the vital role of agriculture in Indian society, viewing it as a profound connection between nature and the populace. He extended his gratitude to the FAO Director-General, Qu Dongyu, for his supportive remarks and contributions.

Modi stated, “This medal is not solely for me; it represents the collective effort of countless farmers, fishermen, agricultural scientists, and workers across India. I accept this honour with great humility, dedicating it to those who provide food for our nation.” This recognition reflects India’s prioritisation of human welfare and sustainable agricultural practices.

Technological Advances in Agriculture

During his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the scientific and innovative practices being implemented within India’s agricultural sector. He noted that these advancements are aimed at developing a sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural ecosystem for the future. The Prime Minister mentioned initiatives such as ‘Per Drop More Crop’ and micro-irrigation efforts, which are pivotal in shaping agricultural policies.

Modi described agriculture in India as a sacred bond with Mother Earth, underscoring its cultural significance. He maintained that the nation is not only focusing on increasing production but also on constructing a farming ecosystem that is sustainable and resilient to climate change. He emphasised the necessity of soil health tests and utilisation of Soil Health Cards to offer farmers essential guidance for crop production.

In his remarks on technology, he pointed out that digital public infrastructure and advanced methods such as AI-based advisory systems and drones are enhancing farming operations. These innovations empower farmers to achieve improved harvests and increased incomes, even facilitating access to live data on weather and market conditions.

Global Impact and Future Aspirations

The Prime Minister outlined that, over the past decade, India has developed approximately 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties, benefiting many farmers. He asserted that India’s science-driven approach is vital in strengthening global food security, particularly for countries in the Global South, indicating an increasing responsibility to ensure food availability.

Modi shared data showing that India’s agricultural exports surged from $35 billion in 2020 to over $51 billion the previous year, reflecting the nation’s growing contribution to global food security. He acknowledged India’s leading position in the production of numerous agricultural products, such as rice, wheat, and various fruits, which together enhance the nation’s standing on the global agricultural stage.

Furthermore, he reiterated India’s commitment to combating hunger and poverty, underscoring the essential role farmers play in supporting future generations. Modi pledged that India would continue its dedicated efforts against global hunger while collaborating with international organisations like the FAO. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the understanding and cooperation extended by the FAO throughout the years.
