PM Modi Departs For India After Completing Five-Nation Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for India following the conclusion of his official tour, which included five countries. The final stop on this tour was Italy, where he met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In a statement shared on the platform X, Modi described the visit as productive, highlighting discussions that spanned various sectors.

During his time in Italy, a significant result of these discussions was the elevation of India-Italy relations to a Special Strategic Partnership. Modi expressed gratitude towards Meloni, the Italian government, and its citizens for their hospitality and friendship throughout this engagement.

Highlights from the Meeting with Prime Minister Meloni

In a post on X, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, detailed that the visit to Italy resulted in notable outcomes aimed at enhancing bilateral ties. Jaiswal stated that the relationships between India and Italy are strengthening and evolving considerably. He emphasised that Modi’s visit marks the final phase of his five-country tour and was characterised by a focus on solidifying their Special Strategic Partnership.

Prime Minister Meloni also praised the mutual relations, asserting that India and Italy have never been closer. She referred to Modi’s visit as the apex of a journey marked by consistent commitment and determination over the years. Meloni announced the official elevation of their relationship to the highest level, underscoring the potential for collaboration at the most significant tiers between the two nations.

Both leaders convened at the renowned Villa Doria Pamphili, where Modi was presented with a ceremonial guard of honour. Subsequently, a delegation-level meeting took place, facilitating discussions regarding the progress made in their Joint Strategic Action Plan for the years 2025 to 2029.

Areas of Cooperation and Future Goals

During the discussions, Modi and Meloni explored avenues to further enhance bilateral cooperation, with particular emphasis on sectors such as trade, investments, technology, and defence. Additional areas of focus included the blue economy, connectivity, education, and fostering people-to-people ties more effectively.

The two leaders also reviewed international geopolitical developments, agreeing to collaborate on various global issues of mutual interest. The alignment of India’s and Italy’s diplomatic objectives indicates a robust partnership moving forward.

Prime Minister Modi’s tour commenced on May 15, covering not only Italy but also the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway. This comprehensive diplomatic engagement is aimed at strengthening international relationships and fostering economic ties across these nations.
