PM Modi Claims BJP Will End TMC’s “Maha Jungle Raj” in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised for a significant victory in the West Bengal assembly elections. This announcement came during a rally named Vijay Sankalp Sabha held in Dumdum, where he conveyed optimism regarding the party’s prospects following the first phase of polling. He expressed gratitude towards the electorate for their support, suggesting that the first round of voting had successfully initiated a transformation in the region.

During his speech, Modi characterised the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) as having established a “Maha Jungle Raj,” implying a chaotic governance phase in West Bengal. He emphasised the restoration of democracy in the state, asserting that citizens are crucially involved in rebuilding the “temple of democracy” that he claims had been damaged by the TMC’s administration. The prime minister urged voters to continue their support in the upcoming phases of the election.

Prime Minister’s Remarks on Violence

The prime minister’s speech also addressed allegations of violence during the first phase of polling. Complaints from BJP candidates indicated that TMC members were involved in unrest and intimidation at polling stations. Modi linked the alleged violent acts to the TMC’s anxiety over impending election results, stating that the party was showing signs of concession in defeat.

Notably, BJP candidate Subhendu Sarkar reported being attacked by TMC supporters while assessing polling conditions in his constituency. He alleged that members of his team were forcibly removed from polling stations and that the TMC’s aggressive actions were indicative of its desperation. Furthermore, he claimed that central security forces failed to protect him during the incident.

Another BJP candidate, Agnimitra Paul, detailed a separate incident where her vehicle was vandalised by stone-throwing individuals, purportedly linked to the TMC. While unharmed, she described significant damage to her vehicle and indicated that one of her team members sustained minor injuries from the confrontation. These events were part of a series of reported altercations during the polling process in various districts.

Voter Turnout and Upcoming Phases

Despite the disruptions, the Election Commission of India announced a noteworthy voter turnout of 91.91 per cent for the first phase of polling. This figure reflects active engagement by the electorate amidst the ongoing political tension in the state. The second phase is scheduled for April 29, followed by the counting of votes on May 4.

The upcoming phases are anticipated to be closely monitored, as both the BJP and TMC prepare for decisive contests. Modi’s comments have intensified the ongoing electoral discourse, marking a notable moment in the West Bengal assembly elections. As the political landscape evolves, the focus will remain on voter sentiment and behaviours leading to the next polling date.

Modi concluded his address by rallying support for the BJP’s vision for change in West Bengal, underscoring his belief that the electorate is ready to displace the ruling party. The assertions made during his speech highlighted the dramatic stakes involved in this election cycle.
