PM Modi Addresses Opposition Over Women’s Reservation Bills

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his views on the ongoing opposition to key legislations, specifically the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill. During a discussion in the Lok Sabha, he addressed claims that he has a “political self-interest” in these bills. Modi remarked that if the opposition continues to resist these initiatives, it could naturally play to his political advantage.

In his speech, Modi indicated that shared credit would come into play should the bills be successfully passed. He mentioned his willingness to express gratitude to all contributors by running advertisements to celebrate the collective achievement. He urged that if the bills receive unanimous support, no party would derive any political benefit from the outcome.

Modi stated, “We want no credit,” while reiterating that he is prepared to acknowledge the contributions of others if the proposals are ratified. “Whichever photo you want printed, I am ready to get it done at government expense,” he added, highlighting his openness to a collective celebration of success.

Legislative Proposals Discussed for Implementation

The Lok Sabha has been actively engaged in considering the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, along with The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and The Delimitation Bill, 2026. Modi advocated for the timely implementation of the women’s reservation bill in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections and urged members not to miss this vital opportunity.

In his address, the Prime Minister emphasised moments that shape a nation, asserting that the leadership must recognise and leverage these opportunities. He noted that significant reforms in democracy should evolve with societal needs, thereby reinforcing the essence of democratic development over time.

He acknowledged that the suggestion for women’s reservation originated 25 to 30 years ago, expressing regret over the delay in its implementation. Modi praised the current legislative efforts as a culmination of a long journey toward recognising women’s roles in governance and the need for their representation.

Encouragement for Cross-Party Collaboration

PM Modi encouraged parliamentarians to join together in passing the proposed bills to foster a new direction for the country. He reiterated that this legislative effort involves half the country’s population and represents a significant opportunity for enhancing governance. Modi asserted that the joint efforts of Indian lawmakers can steer the nation towards critical advancements.

During the discussions, various members raised diverse concerns regarding the proposed laws. Modi assured the House that the government intends to provide comprehensive information regarding the suggestions and criticisms raised by members during the debate. He expressed hope that these discussions would facilitate a constructive environment around the proposed reforms.

The Prime Minister described the bills as essential for increasing women’s participation in governance and fostering a new political culture. He referenced that the vision of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, encompasses more than just infrastructure; it entails inclusive growth where everyone’s rights are upheld. Modi emphasised that the push for women’s representation is integral to transforming the political landscape.

While the opposition parties have expressed support for the Women’s Reservation Act, they have voiced strong objections to the Delimitation Bill. Modi’s appeal for collaboration aims to navigate these complexities, advocating for a united approach to address issues related to women’s representation and broader governance reforms.
