A Parliamentary committee has called upon representatives from major social media platforms, including Meta and X, to attend a meeting set for August 3. The meeting’s focus will be on the regulation of social and digital platforms, specifically addressing the privacy concerns for various demographics and the platforms’ approaches to maintaining public order.

This forthcoming discussion follows recent events where the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) extensively utilised social media, particularly Instagram, to rally support and share information regarding their student protest at Jantar Mantar. This protest centred on issues such as the NEET-UG paper leak. Through videos, reels, and live updates, the CJP captured considerable attention and participation for their demonstrations on social platforms.

Nishikant Dubey, the BJP MP who chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, indicated that representatives from Meta, which encompasses Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, alongside Google, X, and Snapchat, are expected to explain their measures for privacy protection across various sectors of society, such as women, children, rural residents, and labourers.

Agenda to Include Briefings from Government Ministries

The meeting agenda will feature presentations from officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs. A notice issued on July 28 details that discussions will revolve around the theme ‘Social and Digital Platforms and Their Regulation.’ This indicates a comprehensive examination of how these platforms are governed in regard to user privacy and overall societal impact.

In a statement shared on X, Dubey mentioned the session is set for August 3, 2026, at 4 PM and highlighted the importance of understanding how social media companies plan to safeguard the privacy of various demographics. He reiterated the need for clarity on measures to uphold public order in coordination with the government’s expectations.

The CJP-led agitation, which lasted 36 days at Jantar Mantar, concluded on July 26, when the government conceded to several key demands put forth by the protesters, resulting in the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as education minister. This has now shifted the focus towards the scrutiny of social media regulations by the Parliamentary Committee.
