Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Thanks Donald Trump For Ceasefire Extension In Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for extending the ceasefire in the ongoing Iran conflict, calling it a crucial opportunity to push forward diplomatic efforts. The extension comes at a critical juncture, with tensions remaining high and negotiations still fragile. Sharif’s remarks underline Pakistan’s continued role as a mediator, as global stakeholders cautiously assess whether the temporary truce can evolve into a lasting peace agreement.

Pakistan Signals Diplomatic Commitment

In a statement posted on X, Sharif thanked Trump for “graciously accepting” Pakistan’s request to prolong the ceasefire, allowing ongoing negotiations more time. He said the move reflected the “trust and confidence” placed in Pakistan’s mediation efforts. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the involvement of Syed Asim Munir, noting that both civilian and military leadership are aligned in pursuing a negotiated settlement.

Sharif emphasised that Pakistan would continue to facilitate dialogue between the concerned parties, positioning itself as a key intermediary in efforts to de-escalate tensions. Islamabad’s diplomatic outreach has included engagement with multiple stakeholders, reflecting its strategic interest in regional stability and conflict resolution.

Hope Rises Ahead Of Islamabad Talks

Looking ahead, Sharif expressed optimism about the next round of negotiations scheduled to take place in Islamabad. He said he hoped both sides would continue to honour the ceasefire and work towards concluding a comprehensive peace deal during the upcoming talks.

The ceasefire extension, confirmed by Trump, is expected to remain in place until Iran submits a “unified proposal” and discussions reach a meaningful stage. The planned talks in Islamabad are being closely watched as a potential breakthrough moment, especially given Pakistan’s active role in bringing parties to the negotiating table.

However, uncertainties remain. Iran has not formally confirmed its participation in the next round and has indicated that it will only engage if discussions promise substantive outcomes. This cautious stance reflects broader concerns about the effectiveness and intent of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Fragile Truce Amid Continuing Tensions

Despite the ceasefire extension, tensions persist on the ground. The United States has continued its naval blockade of Iranian ports, a move Tehran has criticised as inconsistent with the spirit of the truce. This has added another layer of complexity to already delicate negotiations, with key disagreements still unresolved.

International reactions have been measured. António Guterres described the extension as an important step towards de-escalation, urging all sides to build on the opportunity for dialogue. However, the humanitarian toll of the conflict remains severe, with thousands of casualties reported across multiple countries, including Iran, Lebanon, Israel and parts of the Gulf.

Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement highlights its ambition to play a stabilising role in the region. Yet, significant challenges remain, particularly around contentious issues such as the US blockade and Iran’s nuclear programme. Whether the extended ceasefire can translate into a durable peace agreement will depend on the willingness of all parties to engage constructively in the days ahead.
