Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi stated that the Opposition is insisting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi come to Parliament to discuss pressing issues concerning the nation. Gogoi conveyed this message to reporters on August 5, expressing disappointment over the absence of both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. He noted that their absence raises questions of accountability regarding important national matters.

The Lok Sabha had been adjourned until 2 PM on the same day, amid ongoing disruptions in the House, which further highlighted the tensions between the government and the Opposition. Gogoi’s remarks reflect a growing concern within the Opposition regarding their participation in the legislative process, especially in light of significant national topics that require governmental attention.

Leaders of Opposition Call for Accountability from Government Officials

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, echoed the demand for statements from Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament. Kharge emphasised that a constructive discussion is essential for resolving these issues and that their absence from Parliament is a disrespect to the institution itself. He reiterated the need for governmental leaders to be present to engage in dialogue with the Opposition.

Kharge remarked that it has been several days since Parliament reconvened and stressed that both leaders should attend. He characterised the situation as an affront to Parliament, indicating the seriousness of the matter raised by the Opposition. The demand for their presence signals a broader expectation for accountability from governmental authorities at a time when public sentiments are high.

In conjunction with Kharge’s remarks, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain added that the Prime Minister and Home Minister need to respond to serious allegations concerning recent protests. Hussain specifically referred to incidents at Jantar Mantar, where the use of force against students has drawn significant concern from the public and media.

Congress Members Protests Against Police Actions

Several Congress MPs, including prominent figures Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in a protest march from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar within Parliament premises. This protest was directed against the police actions taken against student protestors on July 20. The demonstration highlighted critical issues, including alleged misappropriation of donations related to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir and questions regarding police conduct.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has called for stringent accountability from the central government, particularly concerning the alleged misuse of force against student demonstrators. Vadra stressed that those in positions of authority must take responsibility for the orders leading to the deployment of lathi charges and the use of pellet guns against young citizens engaging in peaceful protests.

In her statements to the press, Vadra underscored the democratic values of the nation, asserting that India should function as a democracy and not a monarchy. She raised concerns over who was responsible for the controversial actions taken by the police, further emphasizing the urgency of addressing the concerns raised by the Opposition regarding public safety and human rights.
