Opposition Exploiting Sonam Wangchuk for Political Gains: Chirag Paswan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chirag Paswan, the Union Minister and National President of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), stated that various opposition parties are attempting to leverage activist Sonam Wangchuk for their political agendas after allegedly losing their influence. He voiced these concerns regarding Wangchuk’s health, which has reportedly declined during his ongoing hunger strike.

During his remarks to ANI at the protest site in Jantar Mantar, Paswan expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that while Wangchuk continues to fast, the responsibility for the protest seems to have shifted towards one individual. He emphasised that the well-being of Wangchuk is a collective concern for both the government and the judiciary.

Paswan remarked, “If the Delhi Police had to intervene, it was because no one would want the country to lose a personality like Sonam Wangchuk.” His comments came in the context of the police intervention aimed at ensuring Wangchuk’s health during the hunger strike. He conveyed that the authorities share concerns about the activist’s deteriorating condition.

Critique of the Protest Dynamics

Paswan highlighted the importance of democratic processes, asserting that individuals dissatisfied with a government have the right to vote. He alleged that various celebrities backing the protest tend to withdraw from political matters when elections approach. He further clarified that while protests are essential for democracy, focusing solely on one person as a focal point for a political movement is inappropriate.

The minister expressed scepticism regarding the demographics of the protestors, questioning how many attendees were actual students. He observed that many present seemed to be older adults rather than young scholars, which raised concerns about the authenticity of the student representation at the protest.

On the topic of student protests, Paswan acknowledged valid concerns surrounding the educational system. He emphasised the importance of protecting students’ futures and argued that there should be no compromises in this regard. However, he challenged the effectiveness of hunger strikes and similar forms of protest in effecting change, suggesting that constructive dialogue should take precedence.

Health Status of Sonam Wangchuk

Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police had transported Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital following alarming health indicators due to his prolonged hunger strike. Wangchuk has reportedly been fasting for 20 days, advocating for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing alleged irregularities in national examinations, including the NEET paper leak issue.

The Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Dr Charu Bamba, confirmed that Wangchuk is currently stable, although he suffers from mild dehydration and weakness as a result of his extended fasting. The medical team continues to monitor his condition closely to ensure appropriate care.

As the situation evolves, both the health of Wangchuk and the political implications of his protest remain focal points of public attention. The discourse surrounding the legitimacy of the protests and the political strategies being implemented by various factions continues to unfold.
