OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT Memory: AI Can Now Remember More About You

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has announced a significant upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system, aimed at enhancing the user experience. This upgrade enables the chatbot to remember details about users more effectively, which allows for more personalised interactions. Instead of treating each conversation as a new encounter, ChatGPT can now recall past interactions and maintain context, which can improve the continuity of conversations.

History of ChatGPT’s Memory Functionality

The memory feature was first introduced by OpenAI in April 2024, allowing users to instruct ChatGPT to retain information for future sessions. A notable improvement came in April 2025, when the system was capable of recalling context from prior chats, extending beyond simply saved memories. This advancement incorporated a process termed “dreaming,” enabling ChatGPT to learn across multiple conversations and create a synthesised memory state for relevant future interactions.

The most recent upgrade builds upon this foundational technology, aiming to resolve issues previously encountered with AI memory systems, such as relevance, accuracy, and growth capabilities. OpenAI has designed a more efficient and powerful memory architecture that can carry context forward over time, significantly enhancing user interactions.

For example, if a user plans a trip to Singapore and engages with ChatGPT two months in advance, the chatbot can utilize previously gathered information, such as interests in wildlife photography or preferences for quieter dining options. This allows the AI to provide tailored recommendations based on individual user profiles, fostering a sense of continuity rather than isolated chats.

Enhanced User Control and Visibility

The upgrade is not solely centred on memory retention; it also empowers users by offering better visibility into stored information. OpenAI has introduced a memory summary page, enabling users to review the key details that ChatGPT has accumulated over time. This feature allows them to modify existing memories, add new information, or specify topics for the AI to address or avoid in future interactions.

If users wish to investigate a particular memory more thoroughly, they can engage in a dialogue with ChatGPT about that specific detail. This increased level of interaction is designed to foster a more collaborative relationship between users and the AI, making the experience more user-centric and adaptable to individual needs.

Currently, this new memory architecture is accessible to Plus and Pro users in the United States, starting from today. OpenAI plans to roll out this feature to other nations as well as Free and Go users in the upcoming weeks. This rollout indicates the company’s commitment to refining user interactions and enhancing the overall functionality of the chatbot.
