OpenAI Introduces Scheduled Tasks Feature in ChatGPT

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has announced the rollout of a significant update to ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing users’ ability to automate repeating tasks, create reminders, and monitor relevant information on their behalf. This new Scheduled Tasks feature is designed to transform ChatGPT into a proactive assistant, capable of independently managing tasks while keeping users informed of important developments.

The Scheduled Tasks system will be available beginning today for subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. OpenAI indicated that the feature allows users to instruct ChatGPT to send reminders, manage recurring work, and track various tasks. This update has been touted to facilitate easier, quicker, and more reliable task management, alongside enhanced notification systems.

A prominent element of this update is the introduction of a Scheduled page within ChatGPT’s sidebar. This dedicated section serves as a central hub, enabling users to view all active tasks, monitor their scheduling, and make necessary adjustments. Users will have the ability to pause, resume, edit, or delete tasks directly from this interface, promoting flexibility and user control.

Task Management Enhancements and Features

The new system provides increased flexibility in the configuration of tasks. Users are no longer restricted to a specific time for execution; instead, they can request ChatGPT to perform actions during broader time frames, such as morning, afternoon, or evening. OpenAI has stated that the task system has been improved, resulting in quicker and more dependable scheduled actions.

This update is particularly beneficial for individuals who require ongoing reminders, periodic summaries, or automated completion of routine tasks without needing to repeatedly prompt ChatGPT. The feature promises to streamline task management and enhance user efficiency.

Additionally, a significant enhancement is the chatbot’s capability to monitor the web and connected applications for updates and changes. This allows ChatGPT to conduct checks proactively, notifying users only when relevant information emerges, thus minimising unnecessary alerts while keeping users informed of pertinent updates.

Limitations and Transition from Previous Features

Despite the advancements, the Scheduled Tasks system does come with certain limitations. OpenAI has specified that tasks can only be executed at a maximum frequency of once per hour. Furthermore, unattended tasks are likely to be automatically paused after a specified period of inactivity, which may affect certain users’ workflows.

This new feature will succeed Pulse, the existing proactive task functionality, which is set to be phased out within 14 days. Users who are currently utilising Pulse will need to transition to the new Scheduled Tasks hub to continue benefitting from these automation capabilities.

The introduction of the Scheduled Tasks feature aligns with OpenAI’s broader initiative to expand and improve ChatGPT’s functionalities. In recent updates, the company has also made significant enhancements to image-related features and has expanded options within Codex for Mac, including Dock icon customisation and support for Computer Use in the European Union.
