Only Five Days Remain for Income Tax Return Filing

The CSR Journal Magazine

The deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) is approaching rapidly, with just five days left for taxpayers to complete their submissions. Organising necessary documents in advance can significantly ease the filing process and help avoid complications such as delays in refunds or notices from the Income Tax Department. The move towards simpler online filings has not eliminated the need for thorough documentation.

Tax experts recommend not solely relying on one document such as Form 16, but rather cross-checking data across multiple sources to ensure accuracy. This proactive approach is essential for a smooth filing experience, especially as the deadline draws nearer.

Seven Essential Documents for ITR Filing

Before accessing the income tax portal, individuals should gather seven critical documents. Primarily, Form 16 serves as a foundational document for salaried employees, detailing salary paid and tax deducted at source. However, relying solely on this form can lead to incomplete filings, according to tax consultant Nishant Shanker from Navraj Global Advisors.

Additionally, Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), and the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) must be reviewed. Form 26AS reflects taxes deducted and collected, AIS outlines financial transactions, and TIS offers a summary of data found in AIS. Shanker emphasises the importance of reconciling these documents to ensure they align, as discrepancies can trigger scrutiny from tax authorities.

Bank statements and interest certificates represent another key category, particularly since interest earned on savings accounts or fixed deposits is often subject to taxation yet may not be indicated in Form 16. Thus, having these documents on hand is vital for comprehensive reporting.

Importance of Document Accuracy

For individuals who have engaged in selling shares, mutual funds, or property within the financial year, maintaining thorough records of these transactions is crucial. Supporting documents such as broker statements, contracts, and capital gains reports assist in accurately calculating tax obligations arising from capital gains.

Additionally, recipients of rental income or beneficiaries of home loan deductions should gather associated documents, including rent receipts, rental agreements, and home loan interest certificates. Although these may not need to be submitted during the filing process, retaining them can prove invaluable in case of future verification requests from the Income Tax Department.

Basic identification documents also hold paramount importance. Taxpayers should ensure their Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Aadhaar details are accurately linked, along with verifying bank account details for any tax refunds. For those with foreign income or assets, related tax records and disclosure documents should be prepared in advance.

Avoiding Common Filing Mistakes

As the deadline approaches, many taxpayers often rush their filings, leading to mistakes. Shanker highlights that relying solely on Form 16, neglecting to account for bank interest or dividend income, and failing to report capital gains are prevalent pitfalls. Systematic verification of all income sources is advocated to minimise such errors.

If discrepancies arise between Form 16, AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS, taxpayers should reconcile these figures rather than simply adopting one document as definitive. Shanker suggests submitting feedback through the AIS portal for any inaccuracies found in AIS and retaining necessary documentation to substantiate reported income.

With only five days left until the deadline, taxpayers who meticulously organise their documentation and validate their income sources can expect a more straightforward filing experience, thereby reducing the likelihood of mistakes or future inquiries.
