The National Testing Agency (NTA) has dismissed 47 officials as part of a significant initiative to reform the agency. This action follows ongoing controversies surrounding examination paper leaks, with sources indicating that some of the terminated officials may face legal and criminal proceedings. The move is notably the sixth major decision announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has reiterated that those harming the future prospects of the youth will face consequences.

Response To Examination Irregularities

The NTA is responsible for conducting the NEET-UG exam, which faced serious challenges this year. Following the cancellation of the May examination owing to irregularities, a retest was conducted in June. Protests erupted in the national capital concerning these issues. Activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protests and recently ended a hunger strike that lasted 26 days. The demonstrations have garnered support from various opposition parties, amplifying calls for accountability regarding the paper leak allegations.

Prime Minister Modi has prioritised the welfare of the youth, stating that the government will introduce fast-track courts to ensure immediate and stringent sanctions against those involved in examination misconduct. In a recent post on X, he directed concerned authorities to take appropriate measures to safeguard the interests of students. The Prime Minister’s urgent stance reflects the government’s commitment to addressing concerns about the examination process.

In a related development, the Education Department has seen personnel changes, with Naresh Pal Gangwar appointed as Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, while TK Anil Kumar has been named the new School Education Secretary. Vineet Joshi, the former Secretary of Higher Education, has been reassigned as Secretary in the Department of Panchayati Raj.

Establishment Of Fast-Track Courts

A Fast Track Court has been established at Rouse Avenue Court to handle cases related to offences under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, along with other associated offences. All relevant cases are to be directed to this newly designated court to expedite legal proceedings. The Delhi High Court has appointed Anu Grover Baliga, the Judge in charge of the Mediation Centre at Tis Hazari Court, as Special Judge overseeing the Rouse Avenue Court.

On July 21, 2023, the Union Cabinet endorsed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, amidst persistent protests nationwide regarding the NEET examination paper leak. The proposed amendment Bill is anticipated to be introduced and debated in Parliament on the upcoming Monday.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda, along with Union Minister Jitendra Singh, engaged in discussions with representatives from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). During their meeting, they assured the participants that the government would consider their demands linked to the examination process. Nadda mentioned that the meeting lasted nearly two hours, during which the CJP delegation articulated three main demands and five suggestions aimed at reforming the examination system. This meeting marks the second occasion the government has interacted with the CJP delegation in this context.
