NLR India Marks 27 Years, Calls For Stronger Action Against Leprosy

The CSR Journal Magazine

NLR India recently celebrated 27 years of its efforts to support individuals affected by leprosy, bringing together a wide array of stakeholders, including policymakers and public health professionals. The event aimed to focus attention on the pressing need to eliminate the disease and the stigma linked to it. Discussions underscored the importance of enhanced last-mile interventions, partnerships, and increased corporate involvement to confront this ongoing public health and social challenge.

Throughout its nearly three decades of operation, NLR India has dedicated itself to various aspects of combating leprosy. Their initiatives encompass early detection strategies, preventive measures, disability care, rehabilitation efforts, and the promotion of mental well-being and livelihoods for affected families across the country. However, speakers noted that despite the availability of medical treatments, reaching isolated communities remains a significant hurdle to complete eradication.

In her keynote address, Marisa Gerards, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to India, Nepal, and Bhutan, highlighted the necessity of inclusive collaboration. She stated, “Reaching the last mile is difficult, but not impossible. With compassion, partnership, and determination, we can ensure no one is left behind.” Her comments resonated with the overarching theme of the event, which called for enhanced engagement among government entities, non-profits, and the private sector.

Personal Stories Bring Attention to Stigma

The event featured poignant personal narratives, including a testimony from Bhimwati, a resident of Jeevan Deep Kushth Ashram in Delhi. She shared her experiences of the lasting stigma and discrimination faced by those affected by leprosy, saying, “My struggle should not become my children’s future. I want to see them accepted, respected, and given every opportunity to achieve great things in life.” Her story illustrated the ongoing social challenges experienced by individuals and families, even after successful treatment.

Ambassador Gerards acknowledged the enduring generational stigma present in Bhimwati’s community and highlighted the need for targeted interventions. She called for greater emphasis on early detection, prompt treatment, and improved social inclusion for affected individuals and families. Organisers of the event pointed out that although leprosy is treatable, the deep-rooted stigma continues to impact education, employment, and mental health outcomes.

Addressing these social barriers is seen as equally important as providing medical treatment. Organisers actively encouraged collaboration with corporate leaders, institutions, and philanthropic organisations to enhance their participation through corporate social responsibility initiatives. They emphasised that increased investment could significantly boost awareness campaigns, minimise stigma, and facilitate access to essential healthcare services.

Call for Enhanced Corporate Engagement

Ashok Agarwal, one of the speakers, reinforced the importance of collective action in achieving long-term goals for leprosy eradication. He remarked, “Leprosy can be eliminated with collective action. With stronger CSR support and greater public awareness, we can build a future free from disease, stigma, and discrimination.” This perspective aligns with NLR India’s mission to ensure that sustained commitment and compassion are paramount in the fight against leprosy.

Despite the strides made against the disease, NLR India reiterated that continuing dedication, awareness, and a compassionate approach are vital to ensuring that no one is overlooked in the eradication efforts. The organisation seeks to foster a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to fully address leprosy as both a medical and social issue.
