The inauguration of the Arogya Vatika, or Herbal Garden, was recently conducted by Shankar Prasad Sharma, the Ambassador of Nepal to India. This event took place at the Nepal Embassy in New Delhi on April 15, underscoring the significance of preventive healthcare and holistic wellness approaches. Ambassador Sharma expressed the importance of this initiative, particularly in the context of the global recognition of wellness and health practices.

Recognition of International Wellness Day

During his address, Sharma highlighted Nepal’s successful proposal at the United Nations to establish April 15 as International Wellness Day. This proposal was reportedly adopted without dissent, paving the way for worldwide observance starting this year. Ambassador Sharma remarked, “All countries globally will celebrate International Wellness Day,” indicating the growing awareness of health-related issues on an international scale.

In conjunction with this development, he elaborated on the newly inaugurated garden, emphasising that similar herbal gardens have been established across India, with the Ministry of AYUSH reportedly setting up around 28,000 such gardens. The decision to create a herbal garden at the embassy aligns with this national initiative.

The Arogya Vatika features approximately 300 varieties of medicinal plants. This garden aims not only to promote preventive healthcare but also to enhance awareness and practice of traditional medicine systems. Sharma noted that many Nepalis are already familiar with these plants and their medicinal uses, which could facilitate greater community engagement and education surrounding traditional practices.

United Nations’ Goals for Wellness

The establishment of International Wellness Day aims to foster awareness and action concerning holistic well-being. The United Nations outlines that this day will provide a platform for education, cultural exchange, and the sharing of knowledge, as well as encourage the global adoption of affordable wellness practices.

The UN further affirms that health and well-being are integral components of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly within Sustainable Development Goal 3. This goal is dedicated to ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being across all age groups. It underscores the importance of mental health, universal health coverage, and the reduction of health disparities.

In its broader context, the UN has acknowledged the wellness sector’s crucial role in advancing Sustainable Development Goals. The sector is said to stimulate job creation, alleviate poverty, and promote sustainable economic growth while enhancing quality of life and encouraging communities to adopt sustainable lifestyles.

Conclusion of the Inauguration Event

The General Assembly’s designation of April 15 as International Wellness Day reaffirms the global commitment to promoting awareness and action focused on holistic health. As events like the inauguration of the Arogya Vatika unfold, they symbolise progress towards greater understanding and implementation of traditional and preventive healthcare practices worldwide.
