NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Madhya Pradesh After Struggling with Exam Cancellation

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident has occurred in Madhya Pradesh’s Mauganj district, where a NEET aspirant has taken her own life, allegedly due to distress caused by the cancellation of her medical entrance examination following allegations of a paper leak. The deceased, Akanksha Chaturvedi, reportedly left a note expressing her inability to face the exam again. She was one among the numerous students who sat for the NEET-UG exams on May 3, which were subsequently cancelled by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 12.

The NTA’s decision to cancel the exams came amid serious allegations of malpractice. A re-test has been scheduled for June 21, stirring further anxiety among the candidates who had prepared extensively for the original date. Akanksha’s family claims she was anticipating a score of approximately 650 marks and had been under considerable emotional strain following the controversy.

Family members indicated that the uncertainty surrounding the examination took a significant toll on Akanksha’s mental health. They suggested that her disappointment and anxiety intensified as the date of the re-test drew nearer, impacting her ability to cope with the situation.

Family’s Sacrifices for Her Education

Akanksha’s family made substantial financial sacrifices in pursuit of her medical career. Despite their limited resources, they reportedly borrowed Rs 3 lakh through a Kisan Credit Card to finance her coaching in Nagpur. Her father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi, who works as a farmer, additionally took a job as a cook in Nagpur to support her the best he could while she prepared for the examination.

The family expressed optimism regarding Akanksha’s potential for admission into a medical college, believing she had the capability to achieve her dreams. She was dedicated to her studies and worked diligently to secure a successful future in medicine.

In her suicide note, Akanksha articulated her fears about the future and the pressures she felt. “Mummy Papa, you believed your daughter would study and become a doctor. But I do not have the courage to take the NEET exam again. I have ruined both of you,” she wrote, reflecting profound despair. She further expressed doubt about her performance in any future attempts at the examination.

Wider Implications of Exam Controversy

The tragedy has left Akanksha’s family in deep shock, particularly given their aspirations for her future in medicine. Relatives of the deceased stated that they had pinned their hopes on her becoming a doctor, and this loss has cast a dark shadow over those dreams.

The NEET exam controversy has reportedly exacerbated anxiety and uncertainty among numerous candidates across the country. In a similar case, a 16-year-old aspirant in Jharkhand also died by suicide, with her family alleging that the NEET issues had severely impacted her mental health. They highlighted her commitment to her studies after completing Class 10, as she attended a coaching institute in Delhi with hopes of excelling in the entrance examination.

As the educational community reflects on these tragic incidents, there are growing calls for more substantial support systems for students grappling with academic pressure. The implications of the exam controversies are becoming increasingly concerning, highlighting the need for immediate attention to the mental health of students preparing for competitive exams.
