In a bizarre turn of events, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, Jiban Krishna Saha, was reportedly caught on his own CCTV cameras as he attempted to destroy evidence, leading central investigators to two mobile phones he’d thrown away. The cameras, installed for his home’s security, became the key to foiling his plan.
The incident unfolded during a raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at Saha’s Murshidabad residence early Monday morning. As ED officials arrived, the MLA allegedly tried to escape by climbing over a wall. In a desperate move, he threw his two mobile phones toward a nearby pond, presumably to prevent investigators from accessing their contents.
A Repeated Offence, A Missed Target
This isn’t the first time Saha has taken such action. Back in 2023, during an investigation into the teachers’ recruitment scam, he allegedly threw his phone into a pond to evade central agencies. This time, however, his aim was off. The phones didn’t land in the water but instead fell on the pond’s bank.
While investigators were initially at a loss as to the whereabouts of the phones, their attention was drawn to the home’s extensive CCTV system. Upon reviewing the footage, they saw the entire incident unfold—Saha throwing the phones and them landing on the bank. The video provided a clear roadmap for the ED officials, who quickly located and recovered the devices. The very tool he’d set up for surveillance became his undoing.
Wider Investigation Underway
The ED raid on Saha’s residence is part of a larger ongoing investigation into the SSC (School Service Commission) Group C and Group D recruitment cases. Authorities carried out searches at five different locations, including the MLA’s house in Kandi and homes belonging to his aunt and in-laws. The recovery of the phones is a significant development in the investigation.
