Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has accused authorities of political vendetta following a police operation at a party office. This incident saw police and municipal officials allegedly forcibly remove the TMC’s signboard and reportedly manhandle party workers. Banerjee made these statements on Thursday, asserting that the actions against the party were unjust and politically motivated.

During the incident, Banerjee claimed that TMC supporters faced physical abuse, suffering torn clothing and harassment, including allegations of molestation against female workers. He raised concerns about the identity of some of the individuals involved, as he alleged that several were in civilian attire with no visible identification during the operation.

Banerjee reiterated that the office was legally rented under the All India Trinamool Congress, with regular rental payments made over several years. He dismissed accusations regarding the legality of the premises and demanded that the authorities present the appropriate civic documents and any demolition orders.

Legal Actions Taken by TMC

The TMC has reportedly taken the matter to the Calcutta High Court, with Banerjee stating that the petition was filed on the same day. He indicated that the hearing is set for Friday, emphasising the party’s commitment to pursue legal remedies and potentially escalate the issue to the Supreme Court, if necessary.

Banerjee highlighted the importance of following legal procedures, articulating that even if an action were deemed illegal, there should be an appropriate legal framework in place before any demolition occurs. He described how locks were allegedly broken and claimed that one party member was nearly pushed from a seventh-floor balcony during the chaos.

Supporters of the TMC have gathered evidence, including video footage, which they plan to submit to judicial and relevant authorities. Banerjee has repeatedly inquired whether the corporation possessed a valid order that sanctioned the actions carried out, questioning the legality of their operation.

Accusations Against BJP and Police Involvement

Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating politically motivated actions against the TMC, expressing concern over the party’s influence on local law enforcement. He posed the question of why the BJP might feel threatened by TMC, suggesting collusion between certain police officers and BJP members during the incident.

Further, Banerjee critiqued the timing of the police operation, contending that it occurred in the evening without legitimate adherence to legal requirements. He stated that the TMC intends to pursue accountability against all officials implicated in actions that contravene constitutional mandates.

He made a strong declaration regarding the primacy of the Constitution in India, asserting that no governmental body, political party, or police officer stands above the law. Banerjee affirmed that the TMC would formally present its allegations of aggression, harassment, vandalism, and unlawful detention to the High Court and other pertinent authorities, reinforcing the necessity of accountability in governance.
