Mumbai Receives Fresh Showers After Delayed Monsoon, More Rain Likely This Week

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Monday, a day after the city received its first significant monsoon showers, bringing relief from hot and humid conditions and easing concerns over declining water reserves. Several parts of the city and adjoining areas witnessed showers early in the morning following an unusually weak start to the southwest monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for June 22 and June 23 and indicated that rainfall activity over the Konkan region, including the financial capital, is likely to intensify in the coming days.

Rain Activity Expected to Increase Across Konkan

According to the IMD, rainfall over North Konkan, including Mumbai, is expected to become fairly widespread on June 22 and remain active throughout the week.

The broader Konkan and Goa region is likely to experience widespread rainfall from June 23 onwards.

The weather department has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Konkan and Goa between June 22 and June 28.

Areas surrounding Mumbai, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, are also expected to witness increased rain activity over the next few days.

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Likely

The IMD said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely over Konkan and Goa between June 22 and June 25.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in isolated areas.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity.

Late Monsoon Had Raised Water Concerns

The strengthening of monsoon activity comes after a prolonged dry spell across Maharashtra despite the southwest monsoon reaching parts of the state earlier this month.

Weak monsoon currents had left Mumbai largely dry, resulting in one of the city’s poorest June rainfall periods in more than a decade.

The delay had triggered concerns over water availability, with levels in Mumbai’s seven reservoirs declining significantly.

In response, authorities imposed restrictions on industrial and commercial water usage and curtailed water supply for construction activities.

City Gets Much-Needed Relief

Mumbai depends heavily on rainfall between June and September to replenish reservoirs and maintain uninterrupted water supply throughout the year.

The arrival of sustained rainfall is expected to provide much-needed relief after weeks of anxiety over the delayed monsoon.

With rainfall activity forecast to strengthen further this week, Mumbai could finally witness the southwest monsoon gather momentum after a sluggish start.

The coming days are expected to bring the widespread showers typically associated with the city’s rainy season.
