Bank Holidays in August 2026 Announced by RBI

The CSR Journal Magazine

Banks throughout India are set to observe closures for as many as eight days in various states during August 2026. This closure is attributed to a combination of regional festivals, national holidays, and specific observances designated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In addition to these state-level holidays, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks will also close on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, as well as every Sunday.

Given the variability of bank holidays across different states, customers are encouraged to refer to the holiday calendar pertinent to their specific location before planning a visit to any bank branch. Although physical branches will be closed on the notified holidays, several banking services will remain operational online.

Details of Specific Holidays in August

The following outlines the specific bank holidays scheduled for August 2026. On August 4, for instance, banks will be closed in Agartala for Ker Puja. Subsequent holidays include Tendong Lho Rum Faat on August 8 in Gangtok and Patriot’s Day on August 13 in Imphal. Independence Day, observed on August 15, will see a nationwide bank closure affecting numerous locations including cities such as Bengaluru, Kolkata, and New Delhi among others.

On August 19, banks in Agartala will close for the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, while on August 25, closures will take place in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada for Milad-Un-Nabi and First Onam. The next day, August 26, will see banks closed across various cities, including Belapur, Mumbai, and Patna, for Id-E-Milad and Baravafat.

The month concludes with a closure on August 28 for occasions such as Raksha Bandhan and Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti in several cities including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Shimla. Furthermore, banks will also observe regular closures on every second and fourth Saturday and on all Sundays in August.

Availability of Online Banking Services

Despite the closure of physical bank branches on designated holidays, online banking facilities will remain accessible to customers. This includes services such as internet banking, mobile banking, UPI transactions, as well as access to ATMs and cash deposit kiosks. However, services that necessitate in-person branch visits, including cheque clearance and account openings, may experience disruptions and should be scheduled accordingly.

Customers should plan their banking needs in advance, especially for services reliant on branch operation following holidays. It is advisable to utilise digital options wherever possible to minimise inconvenience during these closure days.

The RBI advises all customers to stay informed about the regional holidays and the operational status of banks. This preparation will aid individuals in managing their banking activities efficiently during August 2026.
