Mumbai Entrepreneur Accidentally Transfers Rs 15,682 to Auto Driver, Encounter Surprises Him

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Mumbai entrepreneur found himself in a perplexing situation when he inadvertently paid an auto-rickshaw driver an excess of Rs 15,682 instead of the intended fare of Rs 156. Shubham Gune, the founder and CEO of Hinglish, detailed this incident in a LinkedIn post, describing how a chaotic morning led to an unexpected financial mishap. Gune was racing against time to attend a critical 7 am meeting with an international client, who was in Mumbai for just one day.

As Gune stepped out of the building, he opened Google Pay to complete his transaction for the auto ride. However, he mistakenly entered a much larger amount and completed the payment without taking a moment to verify the transaction details. The oversight went unnoticed until after the disappointing client meeting, which, according to Gune, felt like a significant missed opportunity for business.

Return of the Overpaid Amount

Upon leaving the meeting, Gune learned there was another complication waiting for him. He noticed that the auto driver, identified as Altaf, was still at the drop-off point. Altaf approached him, pointing out the payment discrepancy. To Gune’s surprise, Altaf confirmed that he had returned the excess amount without hesitation. The entrepreneur later realised how kind this gesture was, particularly given the troubling start to his day.

Gune explained that despite his insistence on paying Altaf the Rs 156 owed for the ride, the driver refused the offer. Altaf reportedly remarked, “It’s the start of the day for both of us, sir,” reflecting a sense of empathy that touched Gune deeply. This interaction highlighted not only the driver’s integrity but also his willingness to assist someone in distress.

The LinkedIn post included a screenshot of the payment transaction alongside the refund, providing an account of the incident that resonated with many users on the platform.

Positive Outcome and Expressions of Gratitude

Approximately one week following the disappointing meeting, Gune received encouraging news; the international client reached out again, expressing interest in proceeding with their collaboration. Reflecting on the situation, Gune’s thoughts naturally returned to that fateful morning encounter with Altaf. He realised that the driver’s act of kindness, performed during a difficult time, held significant value beyond the immediate implications of the financial transaction.

In an admirable gesture of gratitude, Gune later sent Rs 500 to Altaf, which included wages for the original fare and a small token of appreciation. This act not only underscored Gune’s thankfulness but also exemplified a newfound respect for the driver’s values.

Gune’s post on LinkedIn garnered a substantial response, with many commentators acknowledging the broader message of the driver’s honesty. Several users noted that while circumstances had improved for Gune, it was Altaf’s integrity that left a lasting impression. They remarked that true character often reveals itself through one’s actions, particularly during challenging moments.
