Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express to Permanently Operate with 20 Coaches Daily

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express is now set to operate with a 20-coach configuration permanently starting on April 28, 2026. This decision by Indian Railways is aimed at enhancing seat availability along one of the busiest inter-city routes in India and improving the overall travel experience for passengers.

This upgrade introduces four additional coaches – three AC Chair Cars and one Executive Class coach – addressing a persistent demand for confirmed seating. Previously, this change had been implemented as a temporary measure during peak travel seasons, but it has effectively become a long-term solution based on careful evaluation of passenger demand.

The enhancement means there will be fewer waitlisted tickets, increased seat availability, and a more streamlined booking process for travellers on a route that witnesses a consistently high volume of passengers.

High Demand on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor

The corridor connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad covers a distance of 491 km and serves as a crucial transport link for business travellers, students, tourists, and daily commuters. The Vande Bharat Express has established itself as the preferred choice for fast and reliable travel, with a journey time of just five hours and thirty minutes and important stops at Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara.

This permanent expansion reflects a structural increase in demand on this route rather than a seasonal spike. It acknowledges the corridor’s importance in accommodating the growing number of passengers who rely on this service for their daily and occasional travel needs.

The success of this service not only addresses immediate seating shortages but also illustrates the evolving travel patterns within India as passenger expectations shift towards efficiency and convenience.

Popularity of Vande Bharat Express

The popularity of the Vande Bharat Express is evident in its passenger numbers. During the fiscal year 2025-26, the service transported nearly 4 crore passengers, representing a substantial 34 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Since its inception in 2019, the Vande Bharat Express has carried over 9.1 crore passengers on more than 1 lakh trips.

Occupancy rates have consistently exceeded 100 per cent, indicating that demand frequently surpasses the available seating capacity. This reflects a broader change in travel preferences, as modern passengers prioritise time efficiency and comfort.

The Vande Bharat trains are adapting to these changing expectations by offering faster journeys, cleaner and modern coaches, improved punctuality, and a seamless onboard experience, particularly evident on high-density routes like Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

Advancements in Network and Features

The features that distinguish Vande Bharat trains include advanced safety systems, automated doors, ergonomically designed seating, mobile charging outlets at each seat, and onboard catering facilities. Additionally, CCTV surveillance and accessible lavatories for disabled passengers enhance the travel experience.

This permanent upgrade reflects a recognition of the shifting mobility needs in India and ensures that Indian Railways remains responsive to the demands of contemporary travellers.
