Mortal Remains of Indian Seafarer Return Home After US Military Strike

The CSR Journal Magazine

The remains of Shiv Anand Chaurasia, an Indian seafarer from Surauli village in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, arrived at his ancestral home on Wednesday, eight days following his death in a US military strike on the merchant vessel MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman. A large crowd of mourners gathered to pay their respects as the body was flown to Gorakhpur before being taken to the village by ambulance.

Upon the arrival of the mortal remains, Chaurasia’s family initially refused to allow the body to be taken from the ambulance. They demanded government support and recognition for the deceased, outlining their grievances regarding insufficient assistance for the family.

Family Demands Government Support and Recognition

In a memorandum presented to the District Magistrate, Ramji Chaurasia, the father of Shiv Anand, requested various forms of government support. This included a job for his wife, financial assistance of Rs 1 crore each from both the central and state governments, free education up to the twelfth grade for his two children, and the designation of martyr status for Shiv Anand.

District Magistrate Madhusudan Hulgi, along with the Superintendent of Police, visited the family to offer their condolences and assured them that their demands would be communicated to the state government. Hulgi remarked that the administration empathised with the family’s sorrow and had engaged with Shiv Anand’s wife and children to discuss their needs.

Officials confirmed that a post-mortem examination would be conducted at the family’s request on Thursday morning, after which the last rites would be carried out. The family’s anxiety over timely arrangements was palpable as they sought closure in a harrowing situation.

Political Support for the Bereaved Family

Ramashankar Rajbhar, a Member of Parliament from Salempur representing the Samajwadi Party, visited the family to express his condolences and promised to advocate for their cause. He stated that they should receive Rs 1 crore in compensation, along with a government job for a family member and a military honour funeral for Shiv Anand.

Rajbhar also indicated that he would bring the matter to Parliament’s attention, emphasising the importance of governmental support during such tragic circumstances. He mentioned that Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, would provide any possible assistance to the grieving family.

Additionally, Surendra Chaurasia, a local BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly, met with the family to express solidarity. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the family in their time of loss and ensured that their concerns would be brought to light as they navigated this difficult period.
