A minor girl from Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly gang-raped by three teenagers in Berhampur, Odisha, after fleeing her home to escape alleged sexual abuse by her stepfather. The girl, who lost her father at a young age, faced unwanted advances from her stepfather following her mother’s remarriage. Distressed after an attempted assault during her sleep, she decided to escape and boarded the Prashanti Express train, which took her to Berhampur.

Life in Berhampur

Upon her arrival in Berhampur, the minor girl began working at a tea stall near the railway station to sustain herself. While working there, she met a 15-year-old boy from Lanjipalli, who became friendly with her. Under the guise of companionship, he invited her to his home, where he lived with his family. It was during her stay that the boy contacted two of his friends under false pretenses.

The Alleged Assault

On March 29, the three boys reportedly led the girl to a secluded area. They allegedly mixed an intoxicating substance into her food, incapacitating her, after which the assault took place. The minor girl was reportedly gang-raped and assaulted multiple times at different isolated locations during that day.

Police Intervention

Following the incident, the Gosain Nuagaon police in Ganjam acted on specific information to conduct searches at various locations and successfully rescued the minor girl. The police have registered a case against the accused individuals. The girl’s statement has been recorded, and she has undergone a medical examination as part of the investigative process.

Legal Proceedings

The Gosain Nuagaon police announced that three individuals, including a 23-year-old and a 19-year-old, have been arrested, while the 15-year-old has been placed in a juvenile home. The charges against them include gang rape under various sections of the law, including applicable provisions of the POCSO Act. Additionally, the police have registered another case against the girl’s stepfather in Andhra Pradesh concerning the alleged sexual abuse that compelled her to escape from home.

Current Status

The investigation is ongoing, and further actions are expected as authorities continue to assess the situation. The involvement of multiple jurisdictions adds a layer of complexity to the case, highlighting the need for coordinated law enforcement efforts in such sensitive matters.
