Microsoft Unveils Surface Laptop Ultra With Powerful New Nvidia Super Chip

The CSR Journal Magazine

Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop Ultra, its latest device powered by Nvidia’s new RTX Spark super chip, during the Computex 2026 event. The introduction of this innovative laptop marks a significant shift in personal computing, aiming to create new possibilities for performance and AI applications. This new model is positioned as Microsoft’s flagship PC, showcasing the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced technology.

Performance Specifications

The Surface Laptop Ultra is equipped with Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, which is an adaptation of the DGX Spark mini-PC and has been optimized for Windows 11. This configuration is reported to provide up to 20 CPU cores and 6,144 GPU cores, boasting processing capabilities near 1 petaflop, which is similar to the performance level of an RTX 5070 laptop GPU. Such specifications are expected to significantly benefit users involved in 3D applications, extensive software compilation, local AI model training, and multitasking activities.

Additionally, the device will offer a maximum of 128GB of LPDDR5X RAM as unified memory, allowing the sharing of RAM across both CPU and GPU depending on the workload. The integration of a dual-fan cooling system is also anticipated to assist in maintaining optimal performance during high-demand tasks.

Another notable aspect of the RTX Spark technology is its support for running large AI models locally. Nvidia claims that devices powered by the RTX Spark will be capable of executing up to 120-billion parameter AI models. Furthermore, enhancements in security measures are included through Nvidia’s OpenShell platform, enabling users to run AI agents safely.

Display and Design Features

The Surface Laptop Ultra features a 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen, which is reportedly the brightest Surface display to date, offering a pixel density of 262 PPI and peak HDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The laptop has a weight of under 4.5 pounds (2.04 kg) and will be available in two finishes: Platinum and Nightfall. Furthermore, the device includes the largest haptic touchpad ever integrated into a Surface product, aiming to enhance user interaction.

Microsoft also emphasises the improved battery life for the Surface Laptop Ultra, promising all-day usability, although specific details regarding battery capacity and charging rates remain undisclosed. Connectivity options include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI ports, a full-size SD card slot, and a headphone jack. However, specifications regarding the exact versions and speeds of these connections have yet to be revealed.

Launch Timeline and Pricing Information

Microsoft has indicated that the Surface Laptop Ultra is scheduled to launch later this year. While anticipation for the device grows, the company has not yet announced any details regarding its pricing. Previous collaborations between Microsoft and Nvidia date back to 2012 when the Surface RT was introduced with Nvidia’s ARM-based chip, a project that incurred significant financial losses for the company.

As the launch approaches, consumers are eager to learn more about the Surface Laptop Ultra’s capabilities, especially regarding its advanced AI functionalities and performance optimisations. This device appears set to redefine expectations in the realm of laptop technology, further solidifying Microsoft’s position in the competitive tech landscape.
