Meta Plans To Use AI For Health Advice On Instagram And WhatsApp

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meta is intensifying its efforts in artificial intelligence, recently announcing subscription plans that enhance usage limits for its AI services. The company’s AI chief, Alexandr Wang, disclosed ambitions to utilise their Muse AI models to provide health advice, potentially through platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Wang expressed to Bloomberg that health is a critical domain for their AI initiatives, as they aim to scale these models to a global user base. As part of this strategy, the Muse Spark model was launched earlier in the year and represents a significant step forward for Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, according to Wang.

While Wang highlighted health functionalities as a primary advantage of Muse Spark, he acknowledged its current limitations, comparing it unfavourably to the leading AI models developed by companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about the potential integration of health advice features across Meta’s various applications.

Concerns Over AI’s Impact On Healthcare Employment

Wang’s remarks have been met with apprehension regarding the implications for jobs in healthcare. Some users on social media platforms like X have raised concerns about the possibility of AI threatening the roles of doctors and nurses. One user articulated fears about the profession entering “the danger zone” as AI gains prominence.

This trepidation extends to potential job displacement within the healthcare sector. The discourse has sparked discussions surrounding the viability of AI in offering health guidance without human oversight, leaving some users questioning the need for medical professionals in an AI-driven world.

Despite some scepticism, concerns also include the accuracy of health information provided by these systems. Users have pointed out the inherent risks of receiving incorrect health advice from AI, with individuals highlighting that a mistaken recommendation could have adverse consequences. Such anxieties illustrate the precarious balance between innovation and patient care.

Privacy Issues And Biological Risks With AI Health Models

Privacy concerns have emerged surrounding the potential use of personal health data in AI applications. Some users expressed hesitance in sharing sensitive medical information with AI models, voicing their apprehensions about data security and privacy. This conversation is particularly relevant as AI continues to evolve in handling personal data.

Wang acknowledged that during the development of Muse Spark, there were raised concerns about potential biological risks associated with the model. While specific details regarding these concerns were not disclosed, he indicated that adequate measures were taken to mitigate these risks prior to the model’s release, which influenced the decision against making it open source.

The rising interest in AI for health-related guidance mirrors a growing trend where users seek assistance through various models for diagnoses, fitness tips, and mental health support. However, this trend necessitates scrutiny around patient safety and the ethical implications of utilising AI for such sensitive areas.
