A 19-year-old student from Ahilyanagar district in Maharashtra has allegedly taken her own life following the distress over her National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET-UG results. The family of Ankita Sangale stated that she had been battling severe depression pertaining to her performance in the examination, and they believe that the pressure she faced over reported irregularities in the entrance process exacerbated her mental health issues.

On the morning of Saturday, the police discovered Ankita’s body at her home while she was alone. Authorities have since registered a case concerning her death and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. The tragic incident has drawn attention to the increasing stress faced by students preparing for competitive examinations in India.

Concerns Raised Over Examination Irregularities

Ankita was dedicated to her ambition of becoming a doctor, having devoted considerable time to her studies for NEET-UG. Her family reported that she achieved commendable results in the initial examination conducted in May; however, following a re-examination on June 21, she scored only 166 marks. This was 11 marks short of the cut-off required to clear the re-examination. Her father noted that the stress related to these outcomes significantly affected her mental state.

In addition to her academic challenges, the teenager grew increasingly anxious as news emerged regarding irregularities associated with the initial NEET examination. Her family’s account suggests that these external factors may have contributed to her overwhelming stress levels, which eventually culminated in her tragic decision.

The timing of this incident coincided with broader national unrest regarding the handling of the NEET controversy, prompting the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the same day. This has sparked discourse on the pressures faced by aspirants in high-stakes exams and the systemic issues surrounding them.

Suicide Note Leaves Family in Shock

Authorities have reportedly retrieved a suicide note from the scene, in which Ankita implored her family not to hold themselves accountable for her passing. The note expressed her deep sorrow over not achieving her dreams despite the sacrifices she had made for her studies. She conveyed her love towards her parents and expressed remorse for not fulfilling their expectations.

In her writing, she stated, “Mom and Dad, you gave me so much love, but I could not fulfil even a single one of your wishes. Please forgive me.” In another poignant line, she added, “None of you are responsible for my suicide.” The message indicated her desire for her family to avoid mourning her loss, as she reflected on the considerable dedication she devoted to her aspirations.

This tragic event has led to renewed calls for improved support systems for students facing mental health challenges, and raises questions about the pressures associated with competitive examinations in India. The Singh family hopes that Ankita’s story will resonate with stakeholders and initiate meaningful discussions surrounding the mental wellbeing of students.
