Lucknow Girl Overcomes Adversity to Qualify for NEET

The CSR Journal Magazine

The story of Neelu from Digdigiya village in Lucknow illustrates a profound journey from personal tragedy to triumph. At the young age of fourteen, she experienced the profound loss of her father, who succumbed to illness due to inadequate medical care. This tragedy became the catalyst for Neelu’s life ambitions, compelling her to vow to become a doctor, ensuring that no family would suffer a similar fate due to financial constraints.

A Mother’s Resolve

Following her husband’s demise, Rajkumari, Neelu’s mother, took on the overwhelming responsibility of being the sole provider for the family. Balancing her roles as a hospital assistant and a domestic worker, she earned approximately Rs 10,000 to Rs 11,000 monthly. Despite these financial hardships, Rajkumari remained steadfast in her commitment to her daughters’ education, judiciously allocating resources to ensure Neelu could pursue her aspirations in medicine.

Rajkumari’s relentless dedication reflects the strength of a mother’s love, as she prioritised her daughters’ academic progress even in the face of economic adversity. Every effort was made to secure Neelu’s educational journey, instilling hope and a belief that dreams could be realised.

The family’s challenges, marked by their struggle for basic necessities, morphed into a testament of resilience highlighted by Rajkumari’s sacrifices. Neelu’s determination, reinforced by her mother’s unwavering support, laid the foundation for her future successes.

Academic Achievements and Opportunities

Neelu’s educational journey began at Prerna Girls School, where she distinguished herself academically. Enrolling in Class 11, she was awarded a scholarship from Study Hall School that recognised her potential. Her outstanding performance resulted in an 86 per cent in her Class 10 board examinations, which improved to 94 per cent in the CBSE Class 12 board examinations earlier this year.

In addition to her impressive academic achievements, Neelu’s capabilities earned her a place in the prestigious Vahani Scholarship programme. This programme, selected for only fifty exceptional students across India, will alleviate the financial burden of medical tuition fees and related educational expenses, thus facilitating her journey toward becoming a doctor.

Through her relentless pursuit of education, Neelu has demonstrated that with determination, imagination, and support, it is possible to ascend beyond one’s socio-economic circumstances.

Inspiring Others Through Her Story

Reflecting on her challenges and accomplishments, Neelu attributes much of her confidence and ambition to the education she received. “Prerna Girls School taught me that your background does not decide your future,” she noted, emphasising the transformative power of education. Her hope is that her narrative resonates with other young girls, encouraging them to envision and strive for a brighter future.

Looking ahead, Neelu aims to specialise in cardiology, with the intention of providing timely medical care to underprivileged patients. Her commitment is rooted in her personal history, as she seeks to prevent financial barriers from becoming a hindrance to crucial healthcare. This ambition epitomises her life mission forged from personal sorrow into a pathway of service.

Neelu’s journey is not merely about clearing a formidable entrance examination; it serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, the significance of education, and the profound influence of family support in overcoming adversities. Her story is a beacon of hope for many striving to change their destinies through education and perseverance.
