Landslides Halt Mumbai-Pune Rail Traffic As Heavy Rain Batters Maharashtra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Torrential rain continued to lash Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra on Monday, triggering landslides that disrupted rail traffic on the vital Mumbai-Pune corridor and led to widespread cancellations, diversions and delays in train services.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Pune, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. In view of the weather conditions, authorities have also declared a holiday for schools and colleges in several districts.

Landslides Disrupt Mumbai-Pune Rail Corridor

According to Central Railway, the first landslide occurred at around 3.05 am near Thakurwadi in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section. A second landslide was later reported between Khandala and Monkey Hill.

Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, said all three railway lines through the Bhor Ghat section were affected by the landslides caused by incessant rainfall.

“Due to incessant heavy rainfall in the South East Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, a landslide occurred between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill Loop Cabin on the Up Main Line of Mumbai Division,” Nila said.

The affected tracks include the Up line towards Mumbai, the Down line towards Pune and the Middle line, bringing rail movement through the stretch to a halt.

Several Trains Cancelled And Diverted

The disruption forced Central Railway to cancel, divert and regulate several passenger services operating on the Mumbai-Pune route.

Trains cancelled include the CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express and Dhule Express.

Additional services, including the Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express, were also cancelled. Several long-distance trains were either short-terminated, short-originated, diverted or rescheduled because of the disruption.

Railway officials said restoration work is underway and advised passengers to check the latest train status before beginning their journeys.

Schools Closed As Heavy Rain Continues

With heavy rainfall expected to persist, authorities declared a holiday on Monday for all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar districts.

The IMD has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Maharashtra and warned that gusty winds may accompany the showers.

Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in landslide-prone areas and low-lying localities vulnerable to waterlogging.

The latest disruption highlights the impact of the intensified monsoon across Maharashtra, with transport services and educational institutions affected as authorities continue monitoring the evolving weather situation.
