Kolkata Police has apprehended Shraddha Biswas, also known as Bela, who is purportedly a member of the BORC Jharkhand group. The arrest occurred on May 12, as part of an operation based on intelligence reports. Biswas has been connected to Maoist activities across Jharkhand since 2006.

During a press briefing, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand revealed that the police had been tracking Biswas, stating that she was a key figure in various operations. The authorities reported that she had been active in areas including Ghatshila, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum.

Commissioner Nand noted that Biswas reportedly has over 20 pending cases in Jharkhand, highlighting her extensive involvement in the Maoist ranks. She had previously been arrested in Belpahari in 2004-05 but continued her activities after being released on bail.

In addition, the police revealed that Jharkhand authorities had placed a reward of Rs 15 lakhs on her capture, based on her status within the Maoist organisation. Following her apprehension, the Kolkata Police plans to interrogate her regarding other members involved in similar operations.

Detention of Garga Chatterjee

In a separate incident, Garga Chatterjee, the chief of Bangla Pokkho, was detained in Kolkata due to his online activities related to alleged Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering. According to Commissioner Nand, Chatterjee’s posts had sparked significant confusion among political parties and the general populace.

The police stated that a complaint had been lodged by the District Election Officer regarding Chatterjee’s claims, leading to the registration of a case. Despite receiving notices to appear before authorities, Chatterjee reportedly failed to comply, prompting his arrest.

Commissioner Nand further indicated that Chatterjee was not only facing charges linked to the EVM allegations but was also involved in another suo motu case. This latter case relates to posts that were purportedly inflammatory towards different communities, adding to the legal troubles he faces.

Legal Actions and Implications

The detention of both individuals highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts against activities perceived as undermining public order and electoral integrity in West Bengal. The Kolkata Police are taking a firm stance against those whose actions may contribute to social discord or incite community tensions.

The authorities emphasised the importance of cooperation from the public in relation to such cases, noting that credible information regarding individuals involved in unlawful activities is vital. Police operations continue to focus on maintaining peace and ensuring that laws are upheld throughout the region.

The developments surrounding these arrests will likely attract further scrutiny from various sectors, including political groups and civil rights organisations. The Kolkata Police have reiterated their commitment to thoroughly investigating both individuals to understand the broader implications of their actions on societal harmony.
