Tushar Kanti Das Slams Mamata Banerjee’s Remarks, FIR Against Former West Bengal CM

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tushar Kanti Das has filed a complaint that has resulted in an FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that her remarks during a recent speech were both shocking and reprehensible. Das expressed concerns that her comments could potentially incite communal unrest between two specific religious communities. He emphasised the responsibility of a national leader to foster unity rather than division.

In his statement to ANI, Das described Banerjee’s remarks as deeply troubling, saying that they hinted at destruction if she were to step down from her position. He questioned the rationale behind her assertion, pointing out that such statements contradict her claims of being a secular leader. Das also suggested that her comments might have been a reaction to fears of losing political power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Das urged the Kolkata Police to thoroughly investigate the situation, stating that the implications of Banerjee’s statements were severe. He said, “Pitting people against one another for personal gain is truly shocking.” He reiterated that her comments were not only dangerous but also betrayed her responsibility as a national leader. The timing of his complaint was significant, as it was lodged against the backdrop of Banerjee’s party facing internal challenges following recent election results.

Details Surrounding the FIR Registration

The FIR against Mamata Banerjee was filed by Kolkata Police’s Hare Street division on June 7, in response to Das’s complaint. The filing references multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 196(1), Section 351(2), and Section 352. These sections relate to provocation, breach of peace, and the maintenance of public tranquillity.

According to Das, the comments made by Banerjee on March 9 were misleading and aimed to incite conflict among communities, thereby threatening the democratic fabric of West Bengal. He stated that by calling attention to her remarks, he hoped to address the serious allegations of communal incitement attached to them. His filing has attracted considerable media coverage and public attention.

Critics of Banerjee have pointed out that her comments aired on various news channels and have led to widespread condemnation. Das responded to inquiries regarding the timing of his complaint by explaining that he had initially expected the Election Commission of India to take action before deciding to proceed with a complaint himself.

Mamata Banerjee Faces Political Backlash

Currently, Mamata Banerjee’s political landscape is fraught with challenges, particularly following a disappointing electoral performance. Her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), is reportedly facing internal dissent, with a sizeable group of members declaring themselves as opposition within the assembly. This development has highlighted fractures within the TMC.

In the wake of the elections, three TMC MPs have resigned from the Rajya Sabha, and approximately twenty others are seeking to establish themselves separately in the Lok Sabha. They have requested distinct seating arrangements, asserting their identity as the “real TMC.” This internal turmoil comes at a time when the party is already under scrutiny due to the allegations made against Banerjee.

The ongoing situation presents significant implications for Banerjee and her leadership as she contends with both internal strife and external scrutiny following her controversial remarks. The legal ramifications of the FIR may further complicate her efforts to unify her party and maintain her influence in West Bengal politics.
