The Keralam government has initiated the capture of KM1, an elephant that has been frequently entering the Aralam Farm area and adjacent rehabilitation colonies. According to Electricity, Environment and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sunny Joseph, the tusker will be tranquillised and fitted with a radio collar before being released into a more suitable habitat away from human settlements. This decision follows rising concerns regarding the elephant’s behaviour in residential areas.

Wildlife Protection Measures Approved

The planned operation will adhere to all guidelines established by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. After tranquillisation, KM1 will be monitored closely to ensure a minimal stress experience during the procedure. This method aims to address both the safety of local residents and the well-being of the wild animal in question.

Reports indicate that KM1 has been breaking through various protective barriers designed to prevent such incidents. Its pattern of damage has escalated over time, with the elephant allegedly attacking vehicles and destroying agricultural products without provocation. As the largest tusker in the herd entering the region since 2008, KM1 has raised alarm among local authorities due to its aggressive behaviour.

Details of the Operation and Oversight

The operation to capture KM1 will be overseen by the Chief Conservator of Forests for the Northern Circle in Kannur. The coordination of this mission will fall under the purview of the Kannur Additional Forest Officer (DFO). In addition, the Chief Forest Veterinary Officer and the Assistant Forest Veterinary Officer from Kannur will play crucial roles in the capture and ongoing monitoring of the elephant following its tranquillisation.

Previous incidents have heightened concerns regarding KM1’s behaviour. For instance, a recent report disclosed that the footprints found at the scene of a fatal incident, which resulted in the death of a local individual named Aneesh on February 26, matched those of KM1. This incident underscores the pressing need for decisive action regarding the tusker.

Officials are determined to manage relations between wildlife and human populations more effectively. By capturing KM1 and fitting it with a radio collar, authorities aim to keep track of the animal’s movements and ensure that it avoids human settlements in the future. This preemptive move seeks to mitigate further risks while promoting a safer coexistence between local communities and wildlife.
