Kerala Reports 70 New Shigella Cases, Five Deaths; Government Forms Panel

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kerala has recently witnessed a significant rise in shigella infection cases, reporting 70 new instances and five associated fatalities within the past month. This alarming trend has led the state government to establish a high-powered committee aimed at enhancing the response to infectious diseases. State Health Minister K. Muraleedharan confirmed that from January to June of this year, a total of 146 shigella cases were documented, with nearly half occurring in the last month alone.

Among the patients, a child receiving treatment for the infection in Kozhikode remains in a critical condition. The government’s proactive measures include strengthening disease surveillance capabilities and improving preparedness for potential outbreaks. To facilitate this, Dr S.S. Lal, who serves as a consultant with the World Health Organisation (WHO), has been appointed to chair the newly formed committee.

Kozhikode District Most Affected by Outbreak

Kozhikode has emerged as the most severely impacted district, registering 22 cases of shigella during the month and accounting for two of the reported deaths. Malappuram follows suit, documenting nine cases along with two fatalities, while Thrissur has reported four cases and one death associated with the outbreak.

The distribution of shigella cases across districts reveals that Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram each recorded nine cases, while Kollam logged four cases. Alappuzha noted three cases, and Wayanad reported four cases, with Kannur adding two. Notably, Idukki documented a single case, whereas Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Kasaragod reported no new cases during the month.

This distribution highlights the urgent need for public health strategies focused on affected regions, particularly Kozhikode, which has faced the highest number of cases and deaths. The state’s health department is working diligently to curb the spread of the infection and ensure that healthcare facilities are prepared for rising patient numbers.

Nipah Virus Surveillance Continues Amid Concerns

In addition to the shigella outbreak, Kerala’s Health Minister provided an update on the surveillance for the Nipah virus, a pathogen that the state has encountered in previous years. So far, health officials have tested 38 samples, with only one result returning positive. This development underscores the ongoing vigilance maintained by healthcare authorities in Kerala regarding infectious diseases.

The state remains on high alert given the history of Nipah virus outbreaks, with containment measures being prioritised to prevent any resurgence. The formation of the expert committee is seen as a vital step towards addressing the repeated occurrences of infectious diseases and the necessity for a coordinated response to manage and contain outbreaks effectively and expeditiously.

The collective focus on both shigella and Nipah virus highlights the comprehensive approach the Kerala government is adopting to safeguard public health. As the situation evolves, continued monitoring and collaboration among health officials will be essential in addressing these pressing challenges and protecting the community from further outbreaks.
