The CSR Journal Magazine

KC Venugopal, a Congress Member of Parliament, arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on May 18 to greet dignitaries attending the inaugural ceremony of Chief Minister-designate VD Satheesan. This event marks a significant shift as the United Democratic Front (UDF) is poised to take power in Keralam following a decade of rule by the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Venugopal expressed optimism, stating, “Everything is alright,” when approached by ANI.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 am at Central Stadium, attracting several high-profile attendees from the Congress, including Chief Ministers from states governed by the party. Among the notable dignitaries, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has also arrived in the city for the event.

Significant Political Presence Expected

Congress MP K. Suresh confirmed the attendance of several prominent figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi. The Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Telangana are also expected to participate in the auspicious occasion. Suresh noted that key decisions will follow a Cabinet meeting that will be convened post-ceremony.

“Today we are celebrating our victory in Keralam. VD Satheesan’s government will take the oath at 10 AM. Our leadership is present, and we will be deliberating on important decisions after the formalities,” he stated in the ANI interview.

Shafi Parambil, another Congress MP, described the swearing-in day as momentous for both the party and the citizens of Keralam. He articulated the party’s commitment to honour the promises made during their electoral campaign, asserting, “This is a significant day for the Congress and UDF allies, as well as for the people of the state.”

Key Policies Announced by Incoming Administration

The new administration is set to implement five vital guarantees pledged by Rahul Gandhi during the recently concluded Assembly elections. Ramesh Chennithala, a senior Congress leader, has confirmed he will oversee the Home portfolio. The five guarantees include provisions for free bus travel for women, monthly financial assistance of Rs 1000 for college-going girls, welfare pensions of Rs 3000, health insurance coverage of Rs 25 lakh for every family, and interest-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh to support small businesses.

VD Satheesan is expected to take the oath along with his full Council of Ministers, signalling the return of the UDF to governance in Keralam after a prolonged period under LDF leadership. The new Cabinet will comprise 20 members, featuring prominent Congress figures such as Ramesh Chennithala, K. Muraleedharan, and KPCC President Sunny Joseph, as well as leaders from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Noteworthy appointments in the new Cabinet include Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan as Speaker of the Assembly and Shanimol Usman as Deputy Speaker. MLA Apu John Joseph has secured the position of Government Chief Whip for the new administration.

Election Results and UDF’s Landslide Victory

The UDF achieved a remarkable victory in the 2026 Keralam Assembly elections, securing 102 out of 140 seats. The Congress emerged as the largest party within the Assembly, winning 63 seats, while the IUML followed with 22 seats. In contrast, the LDF managed to secure 35 seats, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won three constituencies.

This transition of power reflects a substantial change in the political landscape of Keralam, marking the end of a decade-long governance cycle under the LDF. The upcoming administration has outlined its ambition to fulfil the commitments made to voters, aiming to address the pressing needs of the populace.
